What Makes for Engaging Combat?

Mm-hmm.
P

chrono trigger was really good about that i think especially because the active the atb system that was originated by i believe final fantasy 6 and then uh used again by chrono trigger i think that's a great way to do it because then you can't just uh whereas a lot of earlier turn-based rpgs where once your turns up just take all the time in the world nothing will happen until you do your turn right the atb system was like no we're gonna keep having stuff going on the background so you better be ready to make your decisions
G
10:13GreerHOST
yeah and can you do you know what that stands for Active Time Battle.
G
10:17GreerHOST
Active Time Battle, right.

And then by the time you're getting to that point where you have that higher damage threshold and less health, you're like, well, I'm not getting hit anymore because now I've learned the combat.
P

It's a really good learning curve built into it.
G
29:18GreerHOST
And that's another thing, a game with a learning curve that just doesn't throw a lot of stuff at you in combat.

I think what Evil Empire did with this game is really refreshing, and I think they've leaned into traversal in a way that Castlevania games have had traversal before as well.
C
67:34Christian SpicerHOST
But I think they kind of looked at some of the more modern Metroidvania games, even Silksong or the Ori games, and and saw how traversal in these 2D environments could be just as rewarding as figuring out how to get somewhere or an enemy encounter.
C
67:51Christian SpicerHOST
And I think what they added with that kind of ballet of navigating spikes you know the celestification of uh or the meat boyification of metroidvania is something that i really appreciate and i was watching some videos some gifs actually of the animations in castlevania belmont's curse slowed down so you can see them and it's like oh this is why it feels so good Like all of the whip, all of that stuff is in there.

The game that most influenced this is clearly Hollow Knight, and that has that all over.
K
10:32Kris WolfheartPANELIST
Like that and Silksong both are very, very much... will give you like four things you could potentially do right now.

I mean when you when it's a game like that you need the controls to be perfect that's why I love Celeste even though Celeste was really difficult like I knew exactly what button to press at what time when I was pressing in I could see the way that it needed me to do it and it would and if ever there was a time where I fell or I did something wrong then I knew that that was my fault because I'd not pressed the button the

right way and Hollow Knight is the same as that I'm not discussing Silksong that game doesn't that game is dead to me but Hollow Knight is exactly that like super smooth controls and I think that's why people really like it
B
49:08Ben AustwickHOST
but now you've frustrated yourself with Castlevania maybe going back to Hollow Knight you'll actually be decent at it no we're not we're not talking about
E
49:14Ed NightingaleHOST
that so I think the controls are inconsistent I think the difficulty is inconsistent it's really hard at the beginning that first boss you watched me do and it took me like quite a few goes to do it that's the one that I beat first go Yes, but you'd played it at the easy games.
