Hoan Bridge

It's just, like, the law of large numbers.

But, uh, sadly somebody passed away at the, at the Hoan Bridge, which Mandy went on, and on, and on about how she di- you didn't like that part of the race.

Uh, but, uh, and, uh, and, uh, Chic- was, it's the Milwaukee, is it the marathon or half-marathon?

So it's the Lakefront Milwaukee Marathon and half-marathon.

Both distances started at 7:00 AM yesterday.

And the runner that passed away was participating in the half-marathon, and this individual was on the second part of the Hoan Bridge about .5 miles away from the finish line.

Unfortunately, um, passed away.

He had a, this runner had an event at right around mile 13 of the half, so had just gone over the bridge, turned around, come back over the bridge, done the entire thing.

But the 5,000 or so people out and a beautiful day running, and it went horribly wrong for 36-year-old John Meis of Waukesha.

Uh, county medical examiner's office formally identified Meis as the runner who collapsed on the Hoan Bridge and was rushed to Froedtert Hospital, where he later died.

Just 36 years old, and it ...

Th- there's no real cause of death yet or at least it's not been communicated, so what happened here? What, what, what went so wrong that a, a, a man who was fit enough to give this, this race a shot ended up going down and was unable to be brought back to life from medical treatment? You see this happen once in a while, and now sadly, this is the, the second instance, uh, in which an endurance event resulted in the loss of life for somebody in our state.

It's a tough route, too.

You do have to do a packet pickup on Saturday, which is in Milwaukee, but it's, it's, An interesting race.

It's got the Hone Bridge twice.

It's difficult if you do the full.

The half, you only do it, well, you still do it twice.

Well, you'd only do it once, right? Yeah, you go over and you come back.

It's a challenge.

The Hone Bridge is sunshine, and it's about two miles of up, up, up, up, up, up, and then down, down, down.

And for the full marathoners, you're going to hit the first time you go over it is right around the 11-mile mark.
