HMT Dunera

That's Mary Clare Adam.

Her father, Leonard Adam, was interned in Britain on the Isle of Man before being loaded onto a ship called HMT Dunera with around two and a half thousand other internees, all males aged 16 to 66.

Several of those men had just days earlier been aboard a ship full of internees heading to Canada that was torpedoed by the Nazis and sunk.

More than 800 died, and those that survived were returned to England to be put on the Dunera to sail to an undisclosed location.

In the months leading up to his arrest, Adam had been writing letters and making requests for jobs and support throughout his networks, including the Academic Assistance Council.

Esther Simpson and the council had a hard time keeping track of Adam after his arrest.

At each point, it took months to find out where he was; from an internment camp on the Isle of Man to the HMT Dunera sailing to no one knew where.

Even the men aboard this ship did not know their final destination.
