By the afternoon of May 24th, a few hours after the engagement with the Hood, there were a total of five battleships, two battlecruisers, two aircraft carriers, and 11 cruisers participating in the hunt and containment of the Bismarck, most of which were actively moving towards where the Bismarck was expected to be on the morning of May 25th.

Admiral Tovey, the commander of the home fleet, was targeting interception at around 8.30am on the 25th, which would allow him to engage with the King George V, aircraft from the Victorious, some destroyers, and the battlecruiser Repulse.

The Repulse was on the clock though, and would have to abandon the chase and start to make its way back to port to refuel at 9am on the 25th, so they were cutting it very close.

Aboard the Bismarck, Admiral Lutgens saw his first task as finding a way to separate from the Prince Eugen so that it could begin commerce raiding, even if the Bismarck never would and needed a head to port.

By this point in the cruise, Lutgens had literally given up on the idea of trying to separate completely from the British cruisers due to the effectiveness of their radar.

He was awarded a Navy Cross for his heroism at wake.

Since the number of G3Ms engaged varied from raid to raid, no more than 34 or fewer than 17, so too did damaged figures.

On at least two occasions, though, as many as 12 returned to their base in the Marshalls damaged.

Recognizing that further action was useless, Captain Leach ordered that the ship lay down a thick smokescreen and break off action.

Leach made this decision because he believed that it was better for him to preserve his ship in the best possible shape that it could be in, so that when the King George V arrived along with the battlecruiser Repulse, he would be able to once again rejoin the fight.

Two battleships and a battlecruiser would be even more formidable than the first battlecruiser squadron had been, well, before the Hood had been hit.

As the Prince of Wales pulled away from the fight, it would begin tailing the German ships much like the Suffolk and the Norfolk had been, and in fact the Prince of Wales would come under the command of Admiral Wake Walker of the Suffolk.

Illegal salvage of low-background steel has most notoriously involved World War II shipwrecks in Southeast Asian waters, including British, Dutch, Australian, American, and Japanese warships.

Perhaps the best-known case involves the HMS Prince of Wales and the HMS Repulse, sunk by Japanese aircraft off the coast of Malaysia on December 10th, 1941.

The wrecks are graves for more than eight hundred sailors.

They suffered years of unauthorized salvage, but the case attracted renewed attention in 2023 when the Chinese salvage vessel Chuan Hong 68 was observed working over the sites with a large crane and dredging equipment.

On December 10, 1941, three days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Pulled the United States fully into the war.

HMS Prince of Wales and her sister capital ship, HMS Repulse, were operating off the coast of Malaya as Force Z.

Sent to deter Japanese landings in the region without adequate air cover.

A decision that would prove catastrophic.

That seems like a reasonable precaution.

Admiral Tuvvy, with King George V, the battlecruiser Repulse, and the carrier Victorious, and a collection of cruisers and destroyers, was southeast of the Bismarck's position, and they would steam west towards an intercept course, although it would take them longer to arrive than the 1st Battlecruiser Squadron.

Force H, based out of Gibraltar, would be tasked with moving into position to protect some convoys instead of actively trying to intercept the Bismarck directly.

Force H was also the primary group responsible for intercepting the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau if they left Brest.

This is the heart of the old British naval dockyard, built in the 1920s to defend the Indian and Pacific Oceans.

The streets are named after Royal Navy ships, HMS Canberra, HMS Repulse, and the houses reflect that history in the grandest way possible.

On Cypress Road and Gibraltar Crescent, the black and white bungalows stand behind manicured hedges, their timber beams dark against whitewashed walls.

They're mostly leased to expats now, but walking past them, you can feel the weight of a century of empire and war.
