In 1981, he was transferred to Gloucester Prison, and two years later, informed that his parole eligibility relied on an admission of guilt.

However, he remained steadfast in his innocence, and after 13 months of denial, he was moved to Bristol Prison where his mental deterioration continued to worsen.

So much so that a forensic psychiatrist recommended he be transferred to a high-security psychiatric hospital.
