So from variety, even in the weather, but from the cities to the central region there in Japan, and then going to spending time near Mount Fuji, a really good piece of advice you gave me based on how I'd answered your questions and your understanding of me was when we left Osaka, we were traveling down to Hiroshima.
GavinGUEST
28:16
And my initial plan was, to stop off on the way and visit Himeji Castle.
GavinGUEST
28:22
It's probably one of the most well-known castles in Japan.
GavinGUEST
28:27

all right how was it great it was about a two-hour ride from where we were staying um it was really really really cool again really really hot believe it or not it was like sort of perched up on a mountain so when you got into the castle and like it was sort of cool in there because it was so high up and they had like the windows open so it created like this crosswind draft wind inside there so it was really nice because you had to climb all the way up to the top of the castle every floor had like something else to see and then climb all the way back down we had to take our shoes off that was a nice cultural shocking experience but first of many it was cool you would think like you go into these places and you're taking off your shoes and you were everybody's wearing white socks you'd think You come out of the castle, everybody's socks are going to be black.

Okiku, which means chrysanthemum, was the name of a beautiful servant girl working at Himeji Castle.
JoHOST
4:36
More specifically, Okiku was a dishwasher, dishwashing servant who... and was eventually entrusted with cleaning and taking care of a precious set of 10 valuable porcelain plates.
JoHOST
4:49
10 porcelain plates which represented the honor and fortune of her master's family.

And like many old Japanese castles, it has seen its share of political intrigue, warfare, death, destruction, and rebuilding.
Kevin O'SheaHOST
1:39
Now, when people talk about haunted castles in Japan, they often mention Himeji Castle and the famous Legend of Okiku, or Osaka Castle and the lingering spirits associated with the Toyotomi clan.
Kevin O'SheaHOST

But Nagoya Castle... that's not usually one of the first places that comes to mind.
Kevin O'SheaHOST
1:59
And that's exactly what makes today's episode so interesting.
ArthurHOST
13:52
That was a good one.
AustinHOST
13:53
Himeji-jo.
ArthurHOST
13:54
Himeji-jo's a good one.
AustinHOST
13:55
That's, that's the best one, in my opinion.
ArthurHOST
13:56
Well, Himeji-jo's the best one.
ArthurHOST

With dual pricing...
MitchHOST
19:06
For example, Himeji Castle, I think now has dual pricing, but it's not like, oh, white boy with blue eyes, you're double the price.
MitchHOST
19:14

And all it was was the Japanese menu didn't include taxes, and the English menu did.
MitchHOST
21:09
Mm-hmm.
MitchHOST
21:10
But, you know, that perceived discrimination, if that's there and there's no transparency behind it, like with Himeji Castle, it's like if you're a local, you get a discount because you are paying local taxes, which that revenue helps this place kind of thing.

I mean, one more issue we have is that we can't, if I go to a ramen restaurant and a multimillionaire or a billionaire or whatever goes to a ramen restaurant, they're both paying in Kagoshima like 700 to 1,000
