Hill County

Fergus County leads the group at 2.5%, followed closely by Blaine and Phillips Counties at 2.6%.

Choteau County sits at 2.9%, while Hill County recorded a 3.4% unemployment rate.

On the state's Native American reservations, where figures are historically higher but improving, the Rocky Boys reservation recorded an unemployment rate of 9.5%, marking a slight drop from last year.

Meanwhile, the Fort Belknap reservation reported an 11.1% unemployment rate, which reflects a notable 1.2 percentage point decrease over the past 12 months.

The Hill County Commission handled a busy agenda during its meeting last Thursday.

Commissioners approved a $17,000 contract with Great West Engineering for county planner services through August of next year.

They also greenlit an $11,200 purchase from Frontline Ag Solutions for a new Beaver Creek Park brush cutter.

Tuesday, September 22nd, the Montana Department of Agriculture will be hosting a pesticide disposal event in Havre.

You have to pre-register for this event by close of business tomorrow, September 15th.

So it's a plant that produces a lot of seed, which can directly decrease yield production and everything like that.

So, so far, In Hill County, we found it in fallow fields and the producers have been great about bringing it in, keeping an eye out for it.

But we really want to know if you guys have seen it or if you've got any questions about what the plant is, be sure to bring it into the extension office for us to either id or send it off to the scudder diagnostic lab for a confirmation on the diagnosis of it the main thing that is different from regular pigweed that we see every day the pigweed has hairs on the stems and leaves whereas the palmer amaranth plant doesn't the palmer plant also has a very long petiole so where that leaf comes off of the stem of the plant That is called the petiole, and it'll be at least twice the size of the leaf.

So that's one of the determining characteristics.

They can have a root system on them that are about as large as a pop can.

So they're really not fun plants to have around.

So if you find a plant that you don't know, you can always bring it down to the Hill County Extension office.

Phase 1 of the restoration of the Chinook City Pool has been completed.

At Thursday's Hill County Commission meeting, the commissioners selected former commissioners and former City of Havre Mayor Doug Carriker to fill the open District 2 vacancy.

Last Friday, September 4th, the commission interviewed former Commissioner Mark Peterson and former Hill County Sanitarian and Planner Clay Vincent besides Carriker for the position.

The District 2 seat became available when former Commissioner Sherry Williams resigned earlier this summer.

Carriker served as a Hill County Commissioner for 10 years from 1997 until 2007 and then served as Mayor of Havre from 2022 until 2025.

He will finish Williams' term through December 31st of 2028.

Caleb Rock of Haver, Carter Rayburn of Chinook, and Xavier Young of Harlem are among 64 Montana students selected for Montana State University's 11th class of Hillman Scholars.

West Nile virus is a virus that's transmitted from mosquitoes to different mammals.

Um, actually it's usually mosquitoes to birds, but humans and horses can be an accidental host of West Nile virus, and then we do not pass it from human to human or horse to horse.

We did have a horse test positive yesterday.

We got the results.

So we have a positive West Nile virus horse in Hill County.

The vet will take that lab and then send it to, onto the state lab, and then they run that and test it for West Nile virus.

The Hill County Commission is seeking county residents to volunteer their time serving on a Hill County board.

Commission Chairman Jake Strissel explains.

We have a lot of great boards, a lot of great people on our boards, and we're very thankful for them.

But we still have board openings in many different areas.

You just swing by the commissioner's office or the clerk and recorder's office.
