Hilkiah

It's funny that now Am Ha'aretz is like slang for someone ignorant.

But in the middle of the renovation, the high priest, Chilkiah, walks over to Shaphan and says three words that send ripple effects throughout the nation.

Verse 8.

I have found a Torah scroll, the book of the Torah in the house of Hashem.

This is the time period.

After that, Jeconiah the king and the queen and the eunuchs, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem and the carpenters and the smiths were departed from Jerusalem by the hand of Elisha, the son of Shaphan and Jemariah, the son of Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah, king of Judah, sent unto Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon.

Here's what's being said.

Thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, unto all that are carried away captives, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem to Babylon.

He tore his clothes in despair.

Then he gave these orders to Hilkiah the priest, Ahaiakim son of Shaphan, Akbor son of Micaiah, Shaphan the court secretary, and Asaiah the king's personal advisor.

Go to the temple and speak to the Lord for me and for the people and for all Judah.

Inquire about the words written in this scroll that has been found, for the Lord's great anger is burning against us because our ancestors have not obeyed the words in this scroll.

I think it might have been the women.

Josiah tried to do the right thing as best as he knew how.

And then when he was 26 years old, while fixing up the temple and its finances, his high priest Hilkiah found a portion of the Old Testament and read this to Josiah.

And in 2 Kings 22, we read Josiah's reaction.

Ezra chapter 7, verse 1.

After these things, during the reign of Artaxerxes, king of Persia, Ezra, son of Sariah, the son of Azariah, the son of Hilkiah, the son of Shalom, the son of Zadok, the son of Ahitub, the son of Amariah, the son of Azariah, the son of Merioth, the son of Zeruiah, the son of Uzziah, the son of Bukai, the son of Abishua, the son of Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the chief priest.

This Ezra came up from Babylon.

He was a teacher well-versed in the law of Moses, which the Lord, the God of Israel, had given him.

Ten years later, when he's 18, so he's been king for a decade, these high places are still operating out in the open.

One day, a priest by the name of Hilkiah, he's got a son by the way.

Hilkiah has a son.

He's named him Jeremiah.

That's kind of a famous name in the scriptures, correct? It is.

It is.

Hilkiah brings what's known as the Book of the Law, Is it the full Torah? Is it the Pentateuch? Is it just Deuteronomy, which means book of law or second law? Doesn't really say.

But he brings this.

Then the nominal Catholic who grew up at the Kennedy compound shows up and now suddenly the book of the law is going to be opened.

He's Hilkiah,

the priest for that matter.

This isn't sustainable.

One day, Hilkiah the priest found a dusty old book that would change the direction of the nation.

He found the book of the law in the house of the Lord.

And the book was almost certainly a copy of Deuteronomy.

It's so good.

While they were bringing out the money that had been brought into the house of the Lord, Hilkiah the priest found the book of the law of the Lord given through Moses.

Then Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the secretary, I found the book of the law and the house of the Lord, and Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan, and Shaphan brought the book to the king.

And so here you have a recovery of the word of God.

It had actually been lost, believe it or not, and they found it.
