High Fidelity

He's a novelist.

He wrote About a Boy and, um, High Fidelity, and he wrote this great analysis of why Dickens and Prince were so significant and what they had in common.

Ah.

And he paints this picture of Prince-

It really is like a meaningful thing.

In fact, the book High Fidelity, also a really good film, basically is based around the creation of a mixtape for his partner.

And he talks about all the songs and why he chose them and the thought process behind

for each

the cloud somewhere, but you'd have access to it whenever you wanted it.

So, I mean, our houses have become emptier.

No tapes, no CDs, no VHSs, no photo albums in a lot of cases, no physical photos, no books.

Yeah.

But that record seems to sort of have this theme that really draws me to it.

And I remember, like, getting that and, and reading High Fidelity by Nick Hornby around the same time, and sort of, like, being like, "Oh, this is sort of like meta art about making art." And I feel like with this record, I mean, you've got Some Bands, you've got Learning to Sing, and both of those seem to sort of center around the idea of, of playing music.

I wonder, uh, what was it about right now that sort of drew you to that particular l- territory? Or is that something you've, you felt like you've done a lot over the years? Or, or what was it about this moment?

And it was kind of that same transition period of like, Okay, I'm done like with English lit and analyzing weird poems that no one cares about.

Like, what's my personality? What do I like? What are books doing these days? And someone had recommended High Fidelity by Nick Hornby.

And I jumped in and I was like, holy cow, this is incredible.

And I think in a lot of ways – It it felt predictive or foreshadowing of like not just my life, but of the culture.

And then I think Rider Strike and COVID kind of killed any chance of it getting a second season.

But that was an incredible adaptation of the book as well.

So High Fidelity, Nick Hornby, have you guys read that book?

I haven't read High Fidelity.

That's right.

The libretto, if you like, is written by Nick Cornby, who wrote High Fidelity and stuff, and Not A Boy.

And Ben Folds is on it, and Amy Mahon's singing on it as well.

I thought it was really good.
