Hieronymus Münzer

Young men in groups, sailors arm in arm, merchants in good cloaks, soldiers, students, apprentices, servants and gentlemen with their faces half hidden.

A German physician who visited Valencia this very autumn, Hieronymus Münzer of Nuremberg, will write that people strolled here late into the night in great numbers so that the scene resembled a fair.

He was also scandalised, he wrote, by the women he saw in the surrounding streets, in bold dress and excessive finery.

Münzer himself is worth a moment's attention.
