Like, that is supposed to be what you think it is.
N
63:25NoahHOST
Okay, so Oshii's closer to the Naito side of the spectrum than the Hideaki Anno side of the spectrum.
A
63:36AmonHOST
It seems like this is born out of a sincere interest in Christianity as a belief system theology.
A

I don't know specifically what he's taken out from it, but clearly something he finds interesting to think about.
DEAD BY DAWN!
Z
5:41Zach Langley Chi ChiHOST
But what I love about them so much is that they are like pure inventive fantasy unleashed.
Z

It's like masculine creativity and imagination, uh, in the hands of boys with no money but a lot of ferocity just ripping each other apart in the woods and then making a movie out of it and they hit this really high note of ecstatic glee that I think Anno Hideaki and Tarantino often hit which is like the boys playing with action figures sensation and I think the first three movies in particular are really evocative of that quality
M
6:15MaggieHOST
Oh, absolutely.
M
6:16MaggieHOST
But I find them so charming.
The Human Vapor

I think just in terms of raw dollar amount, it's more than even Minus... one made domestically now i think there's some weird stuff with like inflation and and yen to dollar conversion in the meantime that might have affected that number but um so it was a big hit domestically obviously it won the japanese academy awards just like minus one did so i understand the instinct to go back to the well so if yamazaki wants to take a break from his minus franchise and you want us and ano is willing to come back for his shin franchise i understand that again I'm interested to see where they get.
A
47:37AaronHOST
Obviously, Hideaki Anno is very creative, responsible for Evangelion, Shangadilla.
A
47:42AaronHOST
As a creator, I have a lot of faith in him.
A
47:45AaronHOST
And Shinji Higuchi, I'm sure, will probably be involved as well.
#128: A Silent Voice (2016)
Z
7:47ZenHOST
Okay.
H
7:47HeathHOST
It's noteworthy because it is also one of the favorite films of, of one Hideaki Anno-
Z
7:52ZenHOST
Okay
H
7:53HeathHOST
... who, uh, even integrated the, the sort of film's title into one of the plot points of Evangelion.
604 - Manga in Motion 73 - 100 Meters
D
35:35dakazuHOST
Okay, yeah.
D
35:35dakazuHOST
So this was written by Hideaki Anno from Evangelion.
D
35:40dakazuHOST
Oh, God.
D
35:40dakazuHOST
Okay.
D
35:58dakazuHOST
So it was after Shin Godzilla.
D
36:01dakazuHOST
Which was
D

directed by Hideaki Anno.
D
36:03dakazuHOST
Yes.

Uh, Akira, the 1988 landmark cyberpunk film, was directed by whom? A, Satoshi Kon; B, Katsuhiro Otomo; C, Mamoru Oshii; or D, Hideaki Anno.
J
54:31JayPANELIST
Can you do that, like, one more time? Or is that just, that's it?
O
54:33OliHOST
Done.
[S22E2] Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone
N
45:58NiamhHOST
So I went over some of, uh, in the intro episode, getting to the point of making the movie.
N
46:04NiamhHOST
Um, and there was a part where Anno was trying to find a studio.
N
46:08NiamhHOST
He didn't want to do it with Gainax.
N
46:11NiamhHOST
He feared that the results, uh, would be too similar, and also that the production difficulties would be too similar.
C
47:22ConnorHOST
I'm glad that didn't screw him up too much.
N
47:24NiamhHOST
Yeah.
C
47:24ConnorHOST
Uh, but I'm just noting the theme with, like, a lot of the production history and Anno's sort of statements, uh, that there's this intense push/pull between, like, sort of seeming to want to do something different and depart from the original and then, like...
C
47:42ConnorHOST
but continuing to gravitate towards, like, fidelity and repeating the same thing.

A

And we really can't discuss that without talking about the absolute monolith of the genre, Hideaki Anno's 1995 masterpiece, Neon Genesis Evangelion.
S

Yes.

The big one.

But hold on.
A

If they're throwing traumatized 14-year-olds into panic attacks in the cockpit, how is this fun for you to watch? Doesn't treating a giant robot like a psychological torture chamber sort of defeat the whole power fantasy appeal of the genre? Like, if I wanna watch giant robots fight monsters, why do I wanna watch a teenager cry in a pool of orange liquid?
S
9:23speaker_3HOST
Well, that is the exact question Hideaki Anno was answering, and it's why Evangelion completely revolutionized the medium.
S
9:31speaker_3HOST
It intentionally shattered the power fantasy.

Sean, you read this before it came out to just give me some like anime bro feedback.
J

And then also there's a little translation from, uh, Hideaki Anno at the top of the piece that is pulled from an episode of Japanimation Station that has not aired yet, but that you did this translation for from the Gundam Char's Counterattack fan club book.
J
6:23Jonathan LackHOST
And I remember when we were recording that episode, you were reading this out and I was opening my notes app and writing Ba, ba, ba, ba, ba.
J
6:29Jonathan LackHOST
Like this is the, this is the shape of the piece now because there's this just one quote that is like this perfect kicker to this.

S

Yes, the director, Hideaki Anno.
S
11:29speaker_1HOST
He took the established tropes of the mecha genre, where giant robots are usually a power fantasy for young boys, and inverted them into a nightmare.
S
11:38speaker_0HOST
He really flipped the script.
