Jane has deep breath, everyone.

worked at the Bipartisan Policy Center, been a program officer at the Spitzer Charitable Trust and the Hewlett Foundation, led work on industrial emissions in Biden's White House Climate Policy Office, led market development for Frontier's carbon removal initiative, and worked as the founding executive director of Blue Horizons, a charitable foundation focused on climate.

She is now a senior fellow at both the Searchlight Institute and the States Forum, a fellow at both the Energy for Growth Hub and the University of Chicago's Institute for Climate and Sustainable Growth, and the principal at Flagle Energy Advisors.

That is, if you were following along at home, an inside perspective on philanthropy, private sector climate finance, government, and nonprofit policy development.

And I think for me, like I thought about this a lot.

I think there were a couple of things that came together at once.

You know, I worked at the Hewlett Foundation at the same time as Jennifer Harris, who was leading this kind of beyond neoliberalism program.

And I was like this nerdy climate person, but I immediately was like, aha.

How do we work towards bringing together some of the larger nonprofits, you know, foundations to get them to see this work as important? Maybe to fund it.

Like, is that a path forward? Is it like working with community foundations at a local level, working with, you know, I don't know, you know, I'll name off the big ones like the Hewlett Foundation or the, you know, Hewlett Foundation actually comes to mind right now because it's, They had put out a kind of a treatise a few years ago about a new economy and new common language for the economy.

And I think, well, wouldn't this be a perfect fit? Where is the academy on kind of dealing with interacting with foundations like at that scale or even at or even then at the local scale of like in a community like Toronto?

Yeah, so I think that, I mean, it's a medley, and it's mixed, and it's all over the place.

No, I appreciate that.

Because, you know, and that's something we ran up against, you know, I had reached out to the Hewlett Foundation a few years ago.

And, you know, they had just named, you know, Harvard, Stanford, and, you know, like three major institutions with three major grants.

So TI School membership is along those lines.

So it's funders like Hewlett Foundation and Ford Foundation.

And within this broader funders roundtable that is thinking about This particular Futures for Development piece, it's got Gates Foundation, usual suspects, but we've also got some funders from Europe, a couple from South Asia, a couple from Latin America.

And I think part of our ambition is to definitely broaden that.

Okay, so these are the groups that they are funding.

Funding from the Clean Break Fund comes from, do you want to take a guess? The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, Bill Gates' Breakthrough Energy Fund, Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation as well.

So basically, if you're listening to NPR, you're probably hearing all of those same names too.

What kind of charitable foundations?

So some of our largest are the Arnold Foundation, the Spitzer Charitable Trust, the Hewlett Foundation.

I'm trying to remember the list offhand.

We have about 10 funders from that space.

Um, so the idea that, that a- any conservative activist or politician can work with those unions is crazy.

But Scott, the Hewlett Foundation is giving them millions of dollars to say that they can.

[laughs] Well, some people we know, uh, do indeed get lots of left-wing money, um, because I, I, I, I, I heartily endorse the theory that when people on the other side are trying to say and do the things you want, th- um, you can give them your money.

That's fine.
