Herbie Flowers was born in May 1938 in Middlesex, England.

And he was a musician specializing in bass guitar, double bass, and tuba, of all things.

So the track opens with that big, empty sonic space.

And right away, Herbie Flowers brings in that bold, pulsing bass riff.

Doubled an octave higher, and it really drives the whole song while filling out the low end from the very start.

And then instead of a normal drum kit, they keep the rhythm really minimal, a muted heartbeat-like bass thump and some crisp hi-hat cymbals and bongos.

Nicknamed Ricky, he was the founding rhythm guitarist and the force behind the southern rock band Black Oak, Arkansas.

Bassist Herbie Flowers passed away in 2024 at the age of 86 from natural causes.

He was one of the most legendary session bassists in rock history.

He created the iconic dual bass line on Lou Reed's Walk on the Wild Side and played on David Bowie's Space Oddity.

So it's known for its bass line.

He actually, while doing the song, literally detuned the bass while he's playing it.
