This Week in Cricket #217: Harmer spins SA to number 1, Black Caps bounce back & Cummins under pressure?

Joffra Archer, Overton going down injured as well.
B
63:55BinksyHOST
So, yeah, auditions for Henry Crocombe, Gus Atkinson and...
B

I'm going to forget the third one.
B
64:03BinksyHOST
Sonny Baker is the other one that they've had a look at throughout the course of this series.
B
65:40BinksyHOST
Yeah, I wouldn't go as far as to say that we've not got major concerns.
B
65:43BinksyHOST
And I think Stu's just really alluded to it, the fact that we've seen teams score 170 off nine overs.
B
65:51BinksyHOST
So yeah, who'd be a bowler in white ball cricket? But from an England perspective, as I said, I think what we have seen is Henry Crocombe has looked okay.
B
66:00BinksyHOST
Bowls at pretty decent pace.

this time.
D
22:46Dan BoothHOST
Why are they playing Henry Crocombe in an ODI against Pakistan to quote the name of that television show? Nobody wants this! Nobody for the last year was like, you know, Henry Crocombe.
D
23:02Dan BoothHOST
It could be a psyop.
D
23:04Dan BoothHOST
Henry Crocombe could just be like a deep state psyop at this point because he got a contract when the powers that be manufacture a kind of situation to try and influence or create a cultural or behavioural impression on the people.
C
23:24Clara SablitzkyHOST
Such as?
D
23:26Dan BoothHOST
playing Henry Crocombe to try and make him a thing.
D
23:31Dan BoothHOST
You want an example of a psyop?
C
23:33Clara SablitzkyHOST
Yeah, I do.

Losing those three matches.
S

And I read quite an interesting thing today, or heard something today about the selections, that Henry Crocombe, who made his debut in that last match and bowled the ball at Liverpool, costing them the game a fantastic shot by harris ralph down the ground to win the match by one wicket that he wasn't even meant to play in the odis and originally he was sent out to the this tournament mainly as a net bowler to be amongst the players because stephen fleming wanted to see the new england test match coach wanted to see how he handled being abroad and you know, the preparations and the kind of the whole being around the squad, how he would manage it all, with the aim, perhaps, of taking him to South Africa for the Test Match Tour in December.
S
24:53Simon HughesHOST
And he wasn't...
S
24:54Simon HughesHOST
I don't think he was really scheduled to play in one of the one-day matches, but, of course, in the end, he ended up opening the bowling in that third game.

And so when they need 50, 50, 40, probably up until 30 to win, it was definitely worth, I think I might have mentioned, it was worth allowing Shadab to hit a couple of boundaries at the end of an over with the field up just so that you could get six balls at Harris-Ralph.
M
7:03Mark ButcherGUEST
And it was definitely worth bringing Gus Atkinson on probably from Curran's end or Henry Crocombe on from Curran's end just to try and blast out a wicket.
M
7:13Mark ButcherGUEST
But of course, as soon as it gets down into you need 20 or whatever like that, then it becomes like, oh, my God, you know, we've got to worry about the runs.
M
7:19Mark ButcherGUEST
We have to try and take the wicket.

Tiny tidbit from Butch that I thought was very interesting was about Henry Crocombe's selection being like a Stephen Fleming-infused selection that they've got some...

Effectively, they've got high hopes for him as a Red Bull bowler and kind of...

But now you have the next generation of Curran, Archer, Brook, Jacks, et cetera, who have played sort of 30 or 40-odd ODIs and feel like they're getting a bit more of a, an understanding of the format.
C
26:25Cameron PonsonbyHOST
Are we gonna see new toy Henry Crocombe?
M
26:28Matt RollerPANELIST
I, I'd like to, um, as much as anything because it was such an extraordinary punt, I think, to give him a two-year contract.
M
26:36Matt RollerPANELIST
I, I, I understand why you want to give fast bowlers in particular central contracts, but I was surprised by the two-year aspect of it, just because it's so rare for an uncapped player to, to win an England central contract full stop.
C
27:32Cameron PonsonbyHOST
Yeah.
M

But the body that represents England players and negotiates with the ECB on the players' behalf.

B
30:12BinksyHOST
Those are probably the things that sort of caught my eye, although there's quite a bit in there.
B
30:19BinksyHOST
Henry Crocombe, young fast bowler, has come onto that list as well.
B
30:24BinksyHOST
But yeah, those are the main talking points for me ahead of a very, very long and challenging winter of cricket for England.
B
30:33BinksyHOST
We've got three tours, I think, before the summer.
Episode 52: On Winning (and losing)
M
13:07Mark ChurchHOST
In news from these shores, the ECB have released the list of 30 centrally contracted players, 11 of whom have been given two-year deals.
M
13:17Mark ChurchHOST
This includes Henry Crocombe of Sussexshire, soon of course to be Surreyshire, who is the first player to be given a two-year deal despite never having played for England.
M
13:27Mark ChurchHOST
The other two-year deals are fairly predictable ones and include Joe Root, Harry Brooke, Geoffrey Archer, Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker, Jacob Ethel, Jordan Cox, Sam Curran, Will Jacks and Josh Tung.
M
13:39Mark ChurchHOST
Anyway, talking of being predictable, let's get today's service started.

R

Jamie Smith is, is still fairly young-ish as well.

Tom Banton, Sam Cook, Jordan Cox, Henry Crocombe, Emilio Gaye, Matt Fisher, and Dan Lawrence have signed central contracts for the very first time.
D
32:27Darren MootooHOST
While Ollie Robinson returns to the list, having been previously awarded a central contract in 2022 and 2023.
D
32:35Darren MootooHOST
Fisher has previously held an England development contract in 2023 and a pace bowling contract in 2022.
D
34:28Darren MootooHOST
The coaching staff will be in place for the upcoming, uh, s- tours of South Africa and then the white-ball tour to Australia, respectively.
