Helpless

We were doing a lot of cocaine, uh, particularly the three of us, not necessarily Neil.

And Neil had waited until about 3:00 in the morning when we finally had slowed down enough to do Helpless, and that's what I remember about Helpless.

Uh, it was a, a great couple of takes.

Um, Neil then took, uh, the tapes down to his studio i- where he lived in just south of San Francisco and played around with them and brought them back to us to, to mix for the album itself.

But that's what I remember most about, uh, recording Helpless, was that, uh, Neil waited until we were slow enough for him.

What's funny about Helpless, which I think is one of the greatest things Neil ever recorded with those guys, is that in a typical Neil Young way, it wasn't meant for those guys.

He had been recording that song earlier that day with Crazy Horse.

That's how he first envisioned it.
