The collection of columns from The Observer, 1994-1995 columns, are some of the best, most uplifting, joyous, mischievous, sometimes angry, sometimes explicit, both in terms of... talking about his life, but also his language, and generally un-universal, uncle-ish gardening writing I've ever read.
B
5:20Ben DarkHOST
And I think that that must be one of the reasons why he is leaving, to hopefully get back to the stage where he can write like that again, rather than being this figure whose every pronouncement is pounced upon by Hello Magazine, Monty Don's shocking revelation about X, Y and Z, some of the things he wrote in there.
B

were were genuinely shocking and hilarious and would now be unacceptable in his role as figurehead i think everyone should go back and get a copy of that book gardening mad that's what it's called gardening mad still an awful awful title but there you go he he had some wonderful stories in there his story about a day in the life of his country garden which is full of workmen and diggers and twenty tons of manure arriving and farmer's fields getting ploughed to pieces which he is trying to coordinate from the train as he speeds into a studio in london to record his ahem little piece to camera for some daytime television show is hilarious and ends with one of the best punchlines in horticultural writing, which I really appreciate.
B

So maybe you should try and go and find a copy of that.

So, yeah, there's this really fun cottage industry of people who used to work with the royals, usually in the 80s, and now make appearances in random articles in Hello magazine saying, this is why the royal family don't eat lobsters, based on my knowledge from when I worked there 35 years ago.
