The ending of Durham Lumiere last-- late last year became a political as well as a cultural news story, which, which we covered here on Front Row.

Many were sad that one of the first and biggest light art festivals in the UK became a victim of its own success, with its organizer, Helen Marriage, saying that the event was no longer financially viable.

Now the city is about to get a new art venue, which nods to that history, called The Light.

Built on the site of the Durham Light Infantry Museum, when it opens this weekend, it will become the first venue of this scale to house contemporary art in the whole of County Durham.
