Will HaywardHOST
29:19
But I would like to talk to you about an anomaly recently.
Will HaywardHOST
29:23
So Helen Jenner has announced her cabinet, her shadow cabinet.
Will HaywardHOST
29:28
So because they are the official opposition, they have to name a cabinet which is opposed to the Welsh Government cabinet.
Will HaywardHOST
29:33
And then when there are questions of, for instance, the housing minister, the shadow housing minister for reform will ask those questions.
Will HaywardHOST
30:12
They don't get extra pay for this, but I'll explain why I think they've done this.
Will HaywardHOST
30:15
Now, there are two potential reasons.
Will HaywardHOST
30:17
Now, one of the reasons might be that Helen Jenner has gone...
Will HaywardHOST
30:20
Wales has got a lot of myriad of very complex problems, and I want the best people in the role, and I want to make the roles more specific than the Welsh Government have made, because I want them to be able to get inside their brief, to understand the minutiae of this, to really be able to hold this Welsh Government to account.

39:04
Dan Thomas, who was appointed leader of reform in Wales back in February, was arrested on suspicion of assault and controlling or coercive behaviour.
speaker_20CORRESPONDENT
39:12
He was subsequently suspended from the party, and has now been replaced by Helen Jenner.
speaker_20CORRESPONDENT
39:17
Considering that Wales is a part of the UK that Reform has performed electorally well in, with them coming second in the Senedd election this year, the fact that two of their most senior figures in Wales have been booted out following troubles with the law certainly doesn't bode well.
speaker_20CORRESPONDENT
39:31
Even prior to the news about Dan Thomas, Reform's polling in Wales seems to have slumped, from 26% in May last year to 19% in early September.
Ray AddisonHOST
2:47
By the time we arrived in the meeting room, Reform's MSes had chosen their new leader.
Ray AddisonHOST
2:53
Helen Jenner, MS for Bangor Conley Mon and Dan Thomas's former deputy, now had to prepare to meet the press.
Ray AddisonHOST
3:00
But I grabbed an exclusive first interview with her for the Reform UK podcast.
Ray AddisonHOST
3:05
Why did you want the job?

6 MINS LATER

Nigel FarageGUEST
9:22
for him to continue as leader whilst he had these domestic disputes going on.
Nigel FarageGUEST
9:27
So we very quickly and rapidly have moved to electing a new leader.
Nigel FarageGUEST
9:33
And as you can see, Helen Jenner is now the leader of reform in Wales.
Ray AddisonHOST
9:40
Nigel went on to explain that he had known Helen for many years, describing her as a determined campaigner who had his trust.
Kenny CampbellHOST
29:16
Of course, she said that.
Kenny CampbellHOST
29:18
So on Monday this week, Nigel Farage unveiled Helen Jenner, who had beaten Jason O'Connell by just 17 votes to 15 votes.
Kenny CampbellHOST
29:26
in a ballot of Reform's Senedd group.
Kenny CampbellHOST
29:29
Now, to explain quite what is going on, Alex spoke on Tuesday to our tame Welsh politics expert, journalist and author Will Hayward, because it is his professional misfortune to understand such things as this.
Alex AndreouHOST
29:46
Thank you so much for having me, it's always good to be on.
Alex AndreouHOST
29:48
It's been a quiet summer in Wales, politics-wise, and then suddenly it all went very, very hectic, didn't it, in the last couple of weeks? More recently now, we've had the new leader unveiled.
Alex AndreouHOST
30:03
It's a lady called Helen Jenner.
Alex AndreouHOST
30:06
Do we know much about Helen Jenner?
Felicity EvansHOST
2:01
On Monday, talking about reform, acquiring a new Welsh leader.
Felicity EvansHOST
2:06
That, of course, was Helen Jenner in the wake of the resignation of Dan Thomas as reform Wales leader after news broke that he had been arrested on suspicion of assault and coercive or controlling behavior.
Felicity EvansHOST
2:21
He has denied any wrongdoing.
Felicity EvansHOST
2:23
That police investigation continues.
Felicity EvansHOST
2:26
And in the meantime, of course, there was an election amongst the reformed members of the Senedd to elect Helen Jenner.
Felicity EvansHOST
2:34
Nigel Farage came to the Senedd to announce the result of that and endorse Helen Jenner as the new permanent leader.
Felicity EvansHOST
2:42
But, of course, that left a vacancy, Dan, didn't it, for a deputy leader.
Felicity EvansHOST
2:47
And that result was announced then on Tuesday.
Dan MorganGUEST
30:00
There's been a change of leadership, isn't there? So Dan Thomas has stepped down and you've now got two ladies.
Dan MorganGUEST
30:07
So you've got Helen Jenner, you know, great Welsh-speaking, and Laura Ann Jones, ex-conservative, but she was one of the good ones who was actually vocal in the Senate about trans ideology in schools, things like that.
Dan MorganGUEST
30:16
And they're both leading the charge now.
Dan MorganGUEST
30:18
And then you've got Francesca O'Brien.

13 MINS LATER

Dan MorganGUEST
43:25
So, you know, again, this is... wordy, but it gives you an idea.
Carl BenjaminHOST
43:28
Please go on.
Dan MorganGUEST
43:29
So Reform Wales deputy leader Helen Jenner is among a number of party figures found to be following the Swansea-based anti-migrant group Voice of Wales on Facebook.
Dan MorganGUEST
43:36
The group is also followed by Senedd member Ian McIntosh, Gareth Thomas, Laura Ann Jones, Joe Martin and Catherine Cullen.
Will HaywardHOST
1:50
[laughs] Um, so he is going to be in Cardiff to announce the new leader.
Will HaywardHOST
1:56
Putting my credibility on the line, I think it's almost certain to be Helen Jenner.
Robin MorganHOST
1:59
Mm.
Will HaywardHOST
1:59
Um, uh, North Wales MS.
Robin MorganHOST
2:08
Sure.
Mel OwenHOST
2:08
Yeah.
Mel OwenHOST
2:09
So tell us about [laughs] Helen Jenner.
Mel OwenHOST
2:11
What should we know?
Jo KiernanPANELIST
4:21
Well, I wonder, actually, if that point about the two women in leadership was as a result, actually, of those allegations of it being terribly blokey, of, you remember, the reform group know more probably about the allegations against Dan Thomas than most people will.
Jo KiernanPANELIST
4:39
Nigel Farage, as you say, swept into town to do something with the reform group and the new leader and Helen Jenner on the steps of the Senate.
Jo KiernanPANELIST
4:49
As you say, there was a contest.
Jo KiernanPANELIST
4:52
Jason O'Connell put his name forward too, and I understand that there were just two votes in it.

6 MINS LATER

Ollie ColeHOST
11:08
So it's interesting how that's going to play with voters.
Ollie ColeHOST
11:10
And you can tell that actually, where reform is on certain policies, there is a lot of disagreement, both among members in the party, but also members in the Senate.
Jo KiernanPANELIST
11:20
Yeah, and I'd be really interested to know what prompted Helen Jenner, the new leader, to say so categorically that she supports the Senedd and evolution.
Jo KiernanPANELIST
11:32
Because we know that in all the polling I've seen over the last sort of year, 18 months, that the majority of reform voters aren't with her.
Rob OsborneHOST
5:29
like the Steve Wright show all over again.
Rob OsborneHOST
5:30
How are you, Gitto? Shabbai, all good? So Helen Jenner, probably not a household name in Wales, is now Reform's new leader in Wales, having replaced Dan Thomas.
Rob OsborneHOST
5:43
Nigel Farage was in town.
Rob OsborneHOST
5:44
I suppose it's a good chance for us to get an impression from you of where do you think Reform are going in the UK right now?
Guto HarriGUEST
6:52
But in his case, it's spilled over into public life.
Guto HarriGUEST
6:55
That's really awkward.
Guto HarriGUEST
6:55
But An interesting appointment in Helen Jenner.
Guto HarriGUEST
6:58
I think the fact that you've got somebody who's literally marking Fianna Fáil with, you know, man for man, woman for man from the same patch, beautiful welsh um speaks welsh fluently loves wales as much as he does to be honest it takes a lot of the toxicity uh that applied have been trying to generate against reform away and so we're looking weirdly at a very interesting battle now um in the center then i think you'll know more about this both of you than me but I suspect with her that what they're up against is something that's harder to dismiss because she's serious, she's committed to the Senedd, she's committed to Wales, and so we'll have a genuine opposition there, and hopefully that will determine that the group are there not to be disruptive and difficult, but to be constructive and opposed.
Ron BrownHOST
28:46

Ron BrownHOST
