De Niro declined and instead wanted their next collaboration to be a comedy, pushing Zimmerman's screenplay as their next project.

Michael Cimino was announced as director in 79, but his involvement with Heaven's Gate stalled his participation.

It's like a three and a half hour Western, but it's got a reputation for being a mess, but it is a beautiful film.

You will have seen his work.

He has worked on such greats as Maverick, The Ghost in the Darkness, Heaven's Gate, the infamous Heaven's Gate.

He also was the, um, DOP for Blow Out.

does he go from Heaven's Gate to...

Which I think was ruined by the fact that he used such a close lens.

Really took away from the landscaping.

So somebody, some film critic, I have not found who coined the term.

But then also the other disaster of just a few years before really was Michael Cimino's Heaven's Gate, which has gotten a sort of reappreciation.

You see stuff about it.

I'm not on team Heaven's Gate, but it was called Kevin's Gate.

Listen, I gotta tell you a story that once I was on a movie called Heaven's Gate, and there were lots of actors and successful actors on it, and I was just a young kid, and I had kind of a glorified extras part.

And I remember I was excited to be in the company of these people, and at lunch I thought, "Oh, they're gonna be talking about f- cinema and, you know, and, and, uh, or Dostoyevsky or, or, or m- action painting, uh." And they were all talking about their farms and their, their houses and their, [laughs] their animals.

And I thought, "How disappointing." Now, here I am.

Because

the decade starts with what? Heaven's Gate, you know? Yep.

So

They're on life support in the 80s.

So I don't know.

Just what are you guys thoughts on this? So Heaven's Gate is a big part of it.

But, you know, there's definitely a trend in the 70s leading to what we have in 1980 where no one wants to touch it.

No, but as you say, like, he does put it in this context.

So they talk about this is hitting around the same time as, like, 1941 and New York, New York, and all of these movies where, like, the auteurs were spending a lot of money and not necessarily making it back or, like... profiting in the way that the studios would have wanted like heaven's gate being the sort of like final nail in that particular coffin um but yeah but yeah but he's also putting in the context of worman's career and how like this is a guy who kind of kind of came out of nowhere and had this sort of spiritual bent in films like zardoz and even in deliverance to an extent you know um and so yeah i i there's i think this is a movie for movie lovers no question

For sure, and I learned a lot too because I had never heard of blind bidding.
