Heather Cox Richardson

Heidi, I want to talk about this transfer of wealth.

I'm a big follower, and I know you are too, of Heather Cox Richardson.

And she has pointed out many, many times in her blogs that in the past 50, 60 years, we have seen... a transfer of wealth from the poor, the middle class, to the upper class.

You know, there was a time in America where CEOs were not paid what they're being paid today.

Okay.

There's so much there.

Heather Cox Richardson is absolutely right.

Over the last 50 years, we've seen the most massive upward redistribution of income ever.

We deserve it.

And then after the fact, there was this whole effort to say, well, the guy was probably a right winger, Lawrence Tribe, Heather Cox Richardson, Jimmy Kimmel.

CBS News said he didn't have any motives at all.

It was just nihilistic, violent extremism without a clear political ideology.

And I think that we're suffering from a lack of connections, especially with people who we don't get along with.

yeah i mean one of the things that people love about you is and you cite the historian heather cox richardson in your book how she marvels at your ability to come up with the exact facts that you need in a moment to just exactly answer a question or win an argument and she really wonders how you do that and a lot of people do i do i mean i watch you and you are a great coming armed with all this data and statistics and all the receipts, do you ever get to a place where you think like we live in a time when two people can come into an argument with completely different sets of facts, which then makes it on some level hard to have a productive conversation? Because if we start at a place where like one person comes with facts, the other person comes with alternative facts, and we're starting off at a place of like what is true and what is not, how do you move on from that point?

Well, this is why I think it's important to think about this as opening minds versus changing them.

If someone is showing up with the Bowling Green Massacre or whatever the line was, you might not get particularly far with that person.

Wait for something to be a trend line, especially if you have limited time, which I do certainly on the five.

I know I'm going to be interrupted between 30 and 40 seconds probably on a good day and that I'm only going to get 90 seconds.

So making sure that you don't, waste time sometimes on going deep into an anecdote where people can kind of glaze over and really hammer those averages, which is the Heather Cox Richardson question.

And then the other piece of advice in there is that cry really hard to calm down about each other.

I mean, on Substack, it's creator first.

And I think it was about a month ago she made the assessment that all of those Trump Republicans, MAGA, because you have two camps of Republicans right now as you do Democrats with the corporate Democrats.

And I don't know what you would call the other group, just normal everyday people like Baby T and Wendy.
