Health literacy

Like, this is a waste of my time, right? And so who the next time has a problem is going to come back in to see you? The person that you scolded or the person that you really heard them out, you gave them the information, you participated in shared decision making.

And also encouraging them to develop those health literacy skills that maybe they have never heard of before.

The American Academy of Pediatrics actually has like a whole media section like for kids about like for parents how to educate their kids or also just like videos made directly for kids.

And like, right, not like six year olds, like teenagers about how to like filter out information and find a source to see if it's something that they should take really seriously or just casually ask their doctor because they're not sure.

Go for it.

Hi, I know you guys may have already touched on it a little bit, but coming from like a very small rural town, I saw a lot of like mistrust or distrust in physicians or not really understanding.

Like you're talking about health literacy.

So how can you like encourage that if eventually I'm going back to or even patient populations like the military that maybe don't want to go see their doctor because they know they'll get called out, things like that.

You are connecting them to official resources.

Another key area is health literacy.

A patient might nod and agree with instructions, but then be unable to explain their medication regimen.

This indicates low health literacy.

The correct CCMA action is to use the teach back method, asking them to explain the instructions in their own words or to provide simplified picture-based handouts.

Language access is also a major exam topic.

So we kind of have to build a way where you can engage in the healthcare system in the way you want to engage.

We just did a bunch of research on digital health literacy for seniors in Medicare.

And I think, you know, you see real gaps.

So we have to, but that's a population that matters to us.

Understanding what is actually motivating behavior versus what people tell you has always been a

challenge.

Tied into that, which I think you're saying it, is just health literacy.

I'm always shocked And everybody, you know, all of our circles were so sophisticated.

And it's because they've been burned before.

And so right now, when we think about that trust and knowledge piece, there's definitely a health literacy portion of it about understanding, but also we have good reasons not to trust the system right now.

And so I think we have to remember that when we come to patients with a diagnosis, with a solution, with that darn portal token, they're not going to say, let's do it without a lot of questions because they've been burned before.

I think that's fair.
