Jack Clayton made the stylish The Innocents, aided by Freddie Francis' luminous cinematography, whilst Vincent Price was up to his old tricks in The Pit and the Pendulum, aided in no small part by Barbara Steele.

Elsewhere, Hazel Court made her last British horror, Doctor Blood's Coffin, before decamping to America and greater things with Roger Corman.

As for my film of this year, well, as brilliant as The Innocents is, I simply have more fun with The Pit and the Pendulum.

Nineteen sixty-two is possibly slightly easier.

The all-star Gorgon certainly has its moments, but The Evil of Frankenstein and The Curse of the Mummy's Tomb are just the company running on autopilot.

For me, this year belongs to Roger Corman and Vincent Price for The Tomb of Ligeia and The Mask of the Red Death.

It's a tough choice, but I'm going to go for Mask, which boasts Price at his most genuinely chilling, a deeply sexy Hazel Court who, thanks to Corman, was finally getting roles worthy of her talent.

And Nicholas Roeg's cinematography makes you think that, in another life, maybe Roger Corman might just have been Ingmar Bergman after all.

She's like Lady Macbeth, really.

She is played by Hazel Court, who we have seen, I believe, in, uh, let's see.

She was in many, um, uh, uh, Curse of Frankenstein, which I didn't review.

She was in Alfred Hitch- Hitchcock.
