And what's really interesting is that that's like a deeply traditional view, but it persists into the modern era, even into modern Zionism, because like there's this famous poem by Ira Haregada in the city of slaughter.

That's this Chaim Nachman Bialik, a major Hebrew poet from the early 20th century.

He's writing about the Kishinev pogrom in 1903.

And he writes in this poem about how the Jews go to the synagogue after the pogrom and are confessing their sins to God because they feel like this was because of their sins.
