Haverford

During his teenage and college years, he acted in juvenile roles with the newly founded Classical Summer Theater at Villanova University.

He graduated from Swarthmore College in 1984 and then received an MFA from the Yale School of Drama in 1987, but he returned in to the Philly area, and at the age of only 26, was hired as professor of theater at Bryn Mawr, creating productions for the students of Bryn Mawr and Haverford colleges.

As a director, both at Bryn Mawr and elsewhere, Mawr created many works based on the writing of Samuel Beckett, as well as a number of previously unstaged pieces by Gertrude Stein.

He also directed plays by Shakespeare, Henrik Ibsen, and August Strindberg.

During the most active periods of his work, in the 1980s, 90s, and early 2000s, Lorde had an abiding interest in the creation of site-specific theater, staging plays that traveled throughout theater spaces, that wandered through rooms of Rittenhouse Square mansions.

that brought in audiences to watch plays staged in abandoned industrial sites, into old prisons, under bridges, beside hotel swimming pools, even around the dinner tables of small private houses.

As well as his many years at Bryn Mawr and Haverford, Lorde has also worked as a director or dramaturg at many leading American non-profit regional theaters, including the Actors Theater of Louisville and the Philadelphia Wilma Theater, and has taught at the Yale School of Drama at the Curtis Institute and the University of the Arts.

Since 1992, he led a succession of small independent producing organizations, including Potlatch and Big House Plays and Spectacles, a small professional theater company he founded with his friend and colleague, the designer Hiroshi Iwasaki.

I cannot thank them as now I would like to, for I am, I think, approaching a stage where I can somewhat understand and relish the things of which they spoke.

And I wonder afresh at the patience and charity of those who go on lecturing, unabated in zest, to boys of whom one in ten may perhaps, fifteen years later, begin to grasp their message.

Indeed, my senses were so continually crammed with new enchanting impressions, and every field of knowledge seemed so alluring, it was not strange I made little progress in any.

Perhaps it was unfortunate that both in America and in England I found myself in a college atmosphere of extraordinary pictorial charm.

The Acadian loveliness of the Haverford campus and the comfortable simplicity of its routine, and then the hypnotizing beauty and curiosity and subtle flavor of Oxford life, with its long footloose rambling vacations, these were aptly devised for the exercise of the imagination, which is often a gracious phrase for loafing.

But these surroundings were too richly entertaining, and I was too green and soft and humorous, in the Shakespearean sense, to permit any rational continuous plan of study.
