Hausa people

Sometimes they're lovers, sometimes they're enemies.

Tonight's story comes from the Hausa people of Northern Nigeria, and it's a very simple story, but it answers a very simple question.

Why does it look like the sun chases the moon? So let's go back to a time when they weren't enemies.

Because once you hear what happened, you might understand just why the sun has never stopped chasing the moon.

But both of the stories are about the same thing, which may mean they are two parts of a larger tale we just don't know about.

This story is a very old oral tradition, and although it's short, there's some interesting things to unpack here.

The Hausa-speaking people of Nigeria say that because the sun's daughter was dropped by the moon, her heat is the reason why the Earth is so hot, which really makes sense if you live in that region of the world, very close to the Sahara Desert.

When the moon eventually moves onto the sun's path, the sun catches the moon.

So I come from Nigeria.

The accepted narrative is that there are three major ethnic groups in Nigeria, the Igbo, Yoruba, and the Hausa.

Again, that's completely false.

Because there is no such thing as an Igbo, a Yoruba, or a Hausa ethnic group.

There is no such thing.

There were hundreds, maybe thousands of these little micro groups.

Tribe, because we all come from different tribes.

Everybody assumes that you're either Hausa, Igbo or Yoruba.

And that is not true, because like I said, depending on who's counting, you either have 400 tribes or you either have 250.

Either way, it's a whole lot.

And typically, lots of the Nigerians that you run into will not be Hausa, Igbo or Yoruba.

They won't.

So there are lots of interesting opportunities for conversations there around tribe.

I don't know because this is what I see with like northern girls you know what I mean like I see them the earrings like even even your the crack in your eyebrow like I you know you just look like yeah I hear it but it's incredible to hear that

even um like the you know the Hausa men that stay around my area sometimes they just speak Hausa to me and I have to correct them that guys I don't know what I said I actually thought the Yoruba you picked up was because you lived in Lagos.

I actually tried to get my service here to the north and they rejected me because they thought I was going home.
