Hauntology

We're haunted, man.

Hauntology is this idea that our present is haunted by the lost futures that we expected to happen, but that never did.

And I don't know if anyone else feels this way, but hauntology is something that plagues me so hard.

There's something that I feel is deeply seated in humanity when it comes to this concept.

Hauntology brings to my mind those like brutalist structures of Eastern and Western Europe sort of emerging from the soft gray fog.

It's the, you know, walking through Iceland on a rainy day and coming across a cliff face and almost being able to imagine the Viking explorers seeing it for the first time.

It's the Tartarian Empire that maybe didn't fall, but rather continued to blossom and bring prosperity to the people.

Well, I still got it, baby.

Um, yeah, no, I'm, I'm intrigued and like to y- I think I, I'm reading this book about hauntology right now called Hauntology, and it sounds like there's a li- yeah, it's a very creative title.

And it sounds very sort of, I don't know, like kind of the things that are bouncing around in my head right now, so I'm very intrigued by it.

I was gonna say, 'cause this is your second time reading it, if I'm not mistaken.

The diary forces Marin to repeat the past without any agency, and that lack of agency perfectly mirrors how Hollywood strips actresses of their power.

This book treats Hollywood as a form of hauntology.

Hauntology is a brilliant framework for this.

Coined by philosopher Jacques Derrida, hauntology essentially argues that the present is constantly haunted by the ghosts of the past, lost futures, repeated mistakes, echoes of history that refuse to die.

Right.
