Hashim ibn Utbah

He was captured while thirsty, refused water, killed, and his body was desecrated by being placed in the carcass of a donkey and burned.

Imam Ali expressed regret that he had not sent the more experienced Hashim ibn Utbah, who might have handled the situation more effectively, while making it clear that this was not a criticism of Muhammad, whom he loved deeply and had raised as his own son.

Ibn Mitham al-Bahrani says that the Imam's words reveal, reveal both his strategic foresight and his deep personal affection.

He acknowledges that Hashim ibn Utbah, being more experienced in warfare and politics, might have managed the volatile situation in Egypt more successfully.

At the same time, however, he explicitly removes any blame from Muhammad ibn Abu Bakr, affirming his love and the fact that he had raised him.

This balance of military assessment and paternal affection is characteristic of the Imam's leadership.
