Hard Boiled

And prior to like two weeks ago, it was my highest rated action film.

And then I watched Hard Boiled.

I haven't seen that one yet, but I've only heard good things.

That movie is insane.

But this is one of the best action movies, for sure.

I have a few that I've given a five, but this one is easily top three.

But Hard Boiled was an influence on this, so it makes sense that it would be up there as well.

Do we agree it's probably top five coolest movies as well?

You should check it out if you haven't.

And motherfucking Hard Boiled.

That's like one of my favorite action films of all time.

Oh, you bet I will.

This was John Woo's fourth appearance on the mountain, if we're also counting Hard, sorry, Mission Impossible 2 and Hard Boiled.

And so, you know, we had plenty of John Woo on the mountain, but we didn't have this one on the mountain.

And it's been kind of haunting us for a while.

Let me say this.

I was going to save this for a punch up at the end, but I feel like this is the first instance where this is going to come up a lot for me.

When we watched Hard Boiled, one of our early episodes, that was where we first talked about the influence of Sam Raimi.

has on John Woo, that there are influences on each other.

It looks fucking incredible.

I think the only movie that looks better than that in the 90s is like Hard Boiled, funny enough.

Yes, Dan Trachtenberg just brought up.

Hard Boiled is a John Woo banger, but Point Break looks incredible.

And it's a movie that also makes me emotional at the end.

And when Swayze says to Johnny, I'll see you in the next life.

So most of the beginning, we're here actually on Kowloon.

I always think this shot here where you see the freezers in here reminds me a little bit of the later John Woo movie, Hard Boiled, where there's a plot point that all the guns are hidden in freezers next to dead bodies.

But I like the handcuffs here, interesting, because they don't just represent the fact that he's physically been arrested, but they also represent the confinement.

As I mentioned before, he's out of control as a character, and the handcuffs actually represent the restrictions on him in terms of freedom, in terms of what he can actually accomplish alone.

Um, I really love it and I would recommend this cause I feel like so many people sees the same kind of action movies but then it's just like that o-one obscure one That s-this is that movie

Yeah Wow Actually I Wow You really loved it It's good I liked it Okay S-so I did enjoy it It was a little strange Though I'm gonna be honest With you Maybe because Of maybe It doesn't help It doesn't help when I say this It, it, it's never It's never a good thing When you have to bring Up another movie But I guess maybe Cause I was Watching john woo Movies and you Brought up Something Earlier In the warmup Questions About plot And I Feel that This has a really Good story I Was like okay I'm locked in But I Felt like It was like It Felt like a Chicago Deep dish pizza But it was a Little under Baked And I Think it's Because Of the Runtime Because It Has It Has Really good Elements To it And you Were right One of First Impressions Was the Action Is pretty Good And There is a Good Story To it But it Felt like There was a Little bit Missing For Me And maybe Because I Had Just Watched Um Something like Hard boiled You Know Where like Th-It's a little Bit more Mm-hmm Of uh More in terms Of the storytelling they They really Kinda hammer Hammering The emotions I think that's What it Came down To It was The emotional Core was Not fully Developed for me But I Have to agree with you I Mean it is Insane Some of the Action And I Had No idea Where the story Was Going to So that's What really St-Really Where this Movie Went Was It took Me places That it w-w- I Didn't think We were Gonna go And Also I want Shout Out That The women In this Movie Are the real Heroes Mmm Yeah If you ask Me yeah And Speaking of Of um This movie ''A hero never dies.''What are Wha-what are y-In Your mind What are some Of the Highlights Like what Really Made you Love it Like certain Scenes or Certain things

Um, it has this very nine-- like late nineteen nineties action aesthetic Right With like the High contrast Colors I think At one Point It was like An indigo Color Like I think It was During the Hotel Sequence And I was Like this j-j--It just Took me Back Cause E-E-You might Have noticed You just Saw Bad Boys Two Recently Has that Same Kind of Aesthetic Mm-hmm A little Bit Um And I Really just I Digged it So much And then I Did Enjoy the Action scenes As well And Li-Like I said Just really Bold Choices Um All throughout The movie Um highlights Thi-This one You're gonna Laugh at 'Cause I f-feel Like we're On the same Page But the First Car chase Where you Could Tell wh-wh-They wer-were Still figuring Out Um Action sequences And Special effects I Guess I'll Say Where [chuckles]One of The drivers Falls out of the Vehicle Sideways And has His head Decapitated By like thIs Patrick Come on Man It has his Head decapitated And Then he just Walks Over And picks It up And I Don't know I Loved it It was Terrible But also Amazing I d-That's the best Way to Describe
