Hans von Tettau

The 3rd Parachute Battalion was halted at the Hotel Hartenstein in Oosterbeek with its brigade commander and the divisional commander.

Lieutenant Colonel David Dobie's 1st Parachute Battalion, entangled in the woods north of the railway, had abandoned its objective, and General-Lieutenant Hans von Tettau was preparing a dawn assault on the landing zones.

So let's start at the beginning.

It is midnight on Sunday, September 17th, 1944.

West of the landing area, a second German effort is taking shape.

The task of containing the British from that side falls to General-Lieutenant Hans von Tettau, He runs the German training establishment in the Netherlands from his headquarters at the Grebbeberg, some 65 kilometres west of Arnhem.

When market begins, he commands a mixed collection of Heer, Kriegsmarine and SS training units.

They are Artillery Regiment 184, Schiffsstammabteilung 6-14, Kraftsbataillon, SS-Wachbataillon 3 and the SS-Unterführerschule Arnheim, a school for non-commissioned officers of three battalions under SS-Standartenführer Hans Lippert.
