According to sources, however, Rock Bridge is actually closed off to the public due to the dangerous terrain and the chances of being swept away by the crashing waves below.

The trail has almost no shade, the stairs get crowded by mid-morning, and the parking lot at the trailhead fills up well before most people expect.

If Diamond Head is the easy one, Hanauma Bay sits at the opposite end of the spectrum, and I say that as someone who's actually failed to get one.

Reservations open exactly 48 hours ahead at 7 a.m. Hawaii time, and I set an alarm, had the site loaded, and still watched every slot for the day disappear by the time I finished checking out.

That's not an exaggeration.

Popular luau's book out weeks in advance too, especially the well-reviewed ones, and boat tours to Molokini Crater or along the Nepali coast, along with helicopter tours over the volcanoes or the coastline, tend to sell out during busy season if you wait more than a couple of weeks.

If any of these are high on your list, don't wait to see what's left after you've booked everything else.

Lock them in first, the same way you would Hanauma Bay or Haena.

The mistakes I see most often aren't really about forgetting to book.

So tack on another $120 to $160 just to get there and back.

And then they figured they'd save a few dollars on their Hanauma Bay day by skipping the car rental and taking an Uber instead.

This is the one where it really backfired.

Rideshare can only drop you off at the top of the access road near the entrance, not down in the lot itself.
