Hanani

Now when Joiakim was high priest, the family leaders of the priests were as follows: Meraiiah was leader of the family of Seraiah.

Hananiah was the leader of the family of Jeremiah.

Meshullam was the leader of the family of Ezra.

Johanan was the leader of the family of Amariah.

A reading from 1 Kings.

And the word of the Lord came to Jehu the son of Hanani against Basha, saying, Since I exalted you out of the dust, and made you leader over my people Israel, and you have walked in the way of Jeroboam, and have made my people Israel to sin, provoking me to anger with their sins, behold, I will utterly sweep away Basha and his house, and I will make your house like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

Anyone belonging to Basha, who dies in the city, the dog shall eat.

And anyone of his who dies in the field, the birds of the heaven shall eat.

Now the rest of the acts of Basha, and what he did, and his might, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel? And Basha slept with his fathers, and was buried at Tirzah.

And Elah his son reigned in his place.

Moreover, the word of the Lord came by the prophet Jehu, the son of Hanani, against Basha and his house, both because of all the evil that he did in the sight of the Lord, provoking him to anger with the work of his hands, in being like the house of Jeroboam, and also because he destroyed it.

In the twenty-sixth year of Asa king of Judah, Elah the son of Basha began to reign over Israel and Tirzah, and he reigned two years.

And Tobiah sent letters to make me afraid.

Now when the wall had been built and I had set up the doors, and the gatekeepers, the singers, and the Levites had been appointed, I gave my brother Hanani and Hananiah the governor of the castle charge over Jerusalem, for he was a more faithful and God-fearing man than many.

And I said to them, 'Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot.

And while they are still standing guard, let them shut and bar the doors.

The people had not yet set their hearts upon the God of their fathers.

Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat from first to last are written in the chronicles of Jehu, the son of Hanani, which are recorded in the book of the kings of Israel.

After this, Jehoshaphat king of Judah joined with Ahaziah king of Israel, who acted wickedly.

He joined him in building ships to go to Tarshish, and they built the ships in Ezeon-Geber.

The words of Nehemiah, the son of Hacaliah.

Now it happened in the month of Chislev, in the twentieth year, as I was in Susa the citadel, that Hanani, one of my brothers, came with certain men from Judah.

And I asked them concerning the Jews who escaped, who had survived the exile, and concerning Jerusalem.

And they said to me, "The remnant there in the province who had survived the exile is in great trouble and shame.

And next to them repaired Melatiah the Gibeonite and Jadon the Meronothite, the men of Gibeon and of Mizpah, the seat of the governor of the province beyond the river.

Next to them Uziel the son of Harhaah, goldsmiths repaired.

Next to him Hananiah one of the perfumers repaired.

And they restored Jerusalem as far as the broad wall.

And Jeshua was the father of Joiakim, Joiakim the father of Eliashib, Eliashib the father of Joiada, Joiada the father of Jonathan, and Jonathan the father of Jaddua.

And in the days of Joiakim were priests, heads of fathers’ houses: of Seraiah, Meraiah; of Jeremiah, Hananiah; of Ezra, Meshullam; of Amariah, Jehohanan; of Malluchi, Jonathan; of Shebaniah, Joseph; of Harim, Adna; of Meraioth, Helkai; of Iddo, Zechariah; of Ginnethon, Meshullam; of Abijah, Zichri; of Miniamin, of Moadiah, Piltai; of Bilgah, Shammua; of Shemaiah, Jehonathan; of Joiarib, Mattenai; of Jedaiah, Uzzi; of Sallai, Kallai; of Amok, Eber; of Hilkiah, Hashabiah; of Jedaiah, Nethanel.

As for the Levites, in the days of Eliashib, Joiada, Johanan, and Jaddua, there were recorded the heads of fathers’ houses; also the priests until the reign of Darius the Persian.

The sons of Levi, heads of fathers’ houses, were written in the book of the chronicles until the days of Johanan the son of Eliashib.

At the Fountain Gate they went up straight before them by the stairs of the City of David, at the ascent of the wall, above the house of David, to the Water Gate on the east.

The other company of those who gave thanks went to the left; and I followed them with half of the people upon the wall above the Tower of the Ovens, to the Broad Wall, and above the Gate of Ephraim, and by the Old Gate, and by the Fish Gate and the Tower of Hananel and the Tower of the Hundred, to the Sheep Gate; and they came to a halt at the Gate of the Guard.

So both companies of those who gave thanks stood in the house of God; and I and half of the officials with me, and the priests Eliakim, Maaseiah, Miniamin, Micaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah, and Hananiah, with trumpets; and Maaseiah, Shemaiah, Eleazar, Uzzi, Jehohanan, Malchijah, Elam, and Ezer.

And the singers sang with Jezrahiah as their leader.

Chapter seven.

Joshua was the father of Joachim, Joachim was the father of Eliashib, Eliashib was the father of Joedah, Joedah was the father of Jonathan, and Jonathan was the father of Jaduah.

Now in the days of Joichim, the priests, these were the heads of the fathers' houses, of Saraiah, Mariah, of Jeremiah, Hananiah, of Ezra, Meshulam, of Amariah, Johanan, of Malak, Jonathan, of Shebaniah, Joseph, of Harim, Adna, of Mariah, Helkiah, of Ido, Zechariah, of Genethon, Meshulam, of Abijah, Zichri, of Maniamin, and of Moadiah, Piltei, of Bilga, Shamuah, of Shemaiah, Jehonathan, of Jureb, Medinei, of Jediah, Uzziah, of Salu, Kelei, of Amok, Eber, of Hilkiah, Hashabiah, and of Jediah, Nathanael.

The Levites, as well as the priests, were recorded as the chiefs of the fathers' houses in the days of Eliashib, Joedah, Johanan, and Jaduah during the reign of Darius the Persian.

The descendants of Levi, who served as the chiefs of the fathers' house, were recorded in the book of the Chronicles until the days of Johanan, the son of Eliashib.

The second thanksgiving choir proceeded to the left where I followed them with the other half of the people on top of the wall from the tower of the furnaces to the broad wall.

Then from above the Ephraim gate past the old gate, the fish gate, the tower of Hananel and the tower of the hundred as far as the sheep gate but they stood still at the gate of the guard.

So the two thanksgiving choirs stood in the house of God, as did I, and the half of the officials with me, and the priests, Eliakim, Meseiah, Minayamin, Micaiah, Elionei, Zechariah, and Hananiah, with trumpets, and Meseiah, Shimeiah, Eleazar, Uzziah, Jehoanan, Milkiah, Elam, and Ezer, The singers sang loudly.
