Hana Highway

Now state and county officials are advising residents and visitors to stay off of the road to Hana.

As we know, Hana Highway oftentimes is prone to flooding, to landslides, to rock falls, so they just want people to stay off of that road especially because some parts of East Maui is expecting up to 10 inches of rain.

So overall, the message is to stay indoors, ride this out.

And a lot of people I spoke with are taking this very seriously.

Uh, luxury was a seven.

Again, this is like such a subjective one as well [laughs] where it feels like you could have maybe, um, been scored higher with this, but, um, because you were having to like drive yourself around like quite a few locations and like down the back of the volcano, which sounded like it was a more harrowing version of the Road to Hana, I think you, um, had said or something along those lines.

Which some people don't enjoy that drive as it is.

Remember, Maui County and Hawaii Island still under a flood watch.

That means flooding conditions are possible over the next, say, 24 hours, right? And they'll get gusty winds as well, but rainfall totals still very high, especially over in the Kaupō area, over into Kea'anae, and probably going along the Hana Highway, they could get upwards of 20 inches of rain.

For us, we're not going to get much in the way of rainfall today, but mainly maybe Saturday into Sunday.

But it's not going to be a rain event.

The State Department of Transportation received $5 million in emergency relief funds for the repair of roads and bridges damaged by the Konolo storms in March.

Projects include repairing the H3 Kiona Ole Road culvert on Oahu and Hana Highway near mile marker 10 on Maui, which was damaged.

by a landslide.

Not a new development for a former secretary accused of illegally funneling money to political candidates.

The car's mileage indicates it was driven from the rental car agency to the park.

While it could have stopped along the Hana Highway path, mileage shows it did not veer from the route.

The same day Kiara rented the car, she attempted to make a hotel reservation in Kihei starting the next day, from July 22nd to 29th, and she also booked a flight home on July 29th, 2019.

By all accounts, it appears she planned on being in Hana for just one night, returning to Kihei the next day, and then flying back to her home in San Diego.

That's all upslope Kailua-Kona and will probably, as it usually does, calm down when the sun goes down.

Let's check out Maui County, the Hana Highway getting a little bit wet.

It looks like West Maui up on the top, Puukukui, some rainfall there, but pretty dry for Molokai and for Lanai.

Our windward side has been wet at times today.

On Maui, Iao Valley is a classic example.

There's high turnover, people are gone for a while, and parking is a little bit set back, and the pullouts along the Hana Highway get mentioned constantly too.

What I've noticed personally is that it seems to happen way more at beaches and trailheads than it does at, say, like, a booked tour or a more remote activity.

Um, and that totally makes sense since a lot of those don't have the same casual foot traffic where someone can just hang around unnoticed.

And finally, let's go over to the island of Maui.

The shoulder closure on Piilani Highway, northbound in the vicinity of Wa- East Waipulani Road.

This is in effect 24/7, and this is due to the construction of a new intersection on the Valley Isle.
