ChrisPANELIST

And do we have any Eric Nyland fans? Nyland Nyland fans in the audience? Halo books like Halo Flood, Fall of Reach, etc.
ChrisPANELIST
0:54
Me, me.
ChrisPANELIST
0:55
Yeah.
Loki JarsonHOST
56:31
Not, it's not gonna click in my head.
Loki JarsonHOST
56:33
The guy who wrote The Fall of Reach novelization around the time the first, the second Halo game came out, that was all canon.
Loki JarsonHOST
56:40
And then Bungie said, "Actually, we're making our own game called Halo Reach, and fuck that book.
Loki JarsonHOST
56:44
So we don't have to follow the canon," and it's just happening again.
DaveGUEST
26:12
...
DaveGUEST
26:12
but also [laughs] but, um, no, so just with, I mean, kinda going off what you were saying there, I just wanted to ask, 'cause, I mean, most people, whenever you, they think of Halo books, they're gonna immediately think, oh, Fall of Reach, The Flood, First Strike, like, kind of the first three.
DaveGUEST
26:38
What made you choose Ghost of Onyx? Is it just because that's the first one you read, or, like, the only one you read? Or is it more like, "No, this is, this is the story that I wanna illustrate, this is the one that deserves to be illustrated"?
Alex BeauregardGUEST
26:50
I felt as Ghost of Onyx, I think, well, Ghost of Onyx, uh, what are the other two? Harvest and I think Cole Protocol were the three other novels that got released after, uh, the three original from the trilogy, and I feel Ghost of Onyx, a lot of people either have read it or have seen it.

But let's get right into what many people listening to this podcast will be interested to hear us talk about, um, We're definitely late to the party.
BrianHOST
3:24
It's been over a week now since it's been announced that 343, our Halo Studios, more recently, has been basically gutted down to a team of a couple dozen that are just going to maintain games that are already out, like Campaign Evolved, MCC, slash maybe book deals and releases, marketing.
BrianHOST
3:45
And Halo in its entirety... being developed moving forward has gone over to Activision.
BrianHOST
3:52
So now Activision will be developing the next full-scale Halo game.

9 MINS LATER

BrianHOST
12:54
I do understand the seriousness of if you really love a story or a game or something specific and it's suddenly decanonized.
BrianHOST
13:02
I understand how shitty that feels and that I can understand having an emotional reaction to that.
BrianHOST
13:07
But at the same time, like it's just like with Star Wars, right? When Star Wars got purchased by Disney, you had the six films, the Clone Wars, all those books, games you cared about.
BrianHOST
13:15
They're in the Legends banner now.
DakotaHOST
1:39
But, uh, I'll start with, with this.
DakotaHOST
1:41
I- I s- I finished reading the first Halo book, which is called The Fall of Reach, which is the prequel novel to the original Halo: Combat Evolved game.
DakotaHOST
1:54
And I've heard that there are some, like, early fragments of Halo that don't really exist in the franchise anymore because it was, like, pre-game canon a little bit, but it does heavily influence the story of the first game and, um, its eventual novelization, Halo: The Flood, which I have picked up now.
DakotaHOST
2:18
And I, I think it's a funny read because it doesn't, it doesn't so much come across as a novel like the first book, The Fall of Reach.
DakotaHOST
2:28
This feels very much like, "This is what happened in the game, and then you enter this room, and this is what happened in the game, and he's missing a gun, so now he has to find a gun." So it follows game logic a little bit more, which is, eh, it's a little weird.
DakotaHOST
2:42
But, um, I'm getting into it and yeah, I'm...
DakotaHOST
3:29
There's so many questions that I have, you know? Like, I don't even know where to begin.
DakotaHOST
3:34
Like, I don't...
Ray HazelHOST
10:19
And there's deep lore into those games.
Ray HazelHOST
10:21
I was such a fanboy of Halo that I absolutely read, I want to say, the first six or seven books that came out for this series.
Ray HazelHOST
10:31

Ray HazelHOST
11:00
It wasn't the thing that got me into sci-fi books, but it definitely helped a lot.
Ray HazelHOST
11:05
So, yeah, I owe that game a lot for all those fun times.
Ray HazelHOST
11:08
And, you know, occasionally there were still lots of fun Halo LAN parties.

14 MINS LATER

Ray HazelHOST
25:00
And even the people that made Halo 5, 343 Industries, try to go out of their way to pretend Halo 5 doesn't exist.
Ray HazelHOST
25:12
They understand they went too hard in the paint.
Ray HazlipHOST

yeah i i owe that game a lot for all those fun times and you know occasionally there were still lots of fun halo land parties i i played the game online a couple times in the friend's house uh the battle rifle added something to the game that i personally didn't like and it added this sort of weird chaos that felt off to me now don't get me wrong it was fun it was cool while playing it in uh single player but it still felt off so Yeah, odd.
Ray HazlipHOST
13:37
Anyways, Halo 3 eventually came out.

14 MINS LATER

Ray HazlipHOST

And even the people that made Halo 5, 343 Industries, try to go out of their way to pretend Halo 5 doesn't exist.

They understand they went too hard in the paint.
NickHOST

Crazy times are happening.
NickHOST
17:22
In what is great news for Halo fans right now, a full cast audiobook has been announced for The Fall of Reach.
NickHOST
17:34
And it will feature Jen Taylor and Steve Downs as both Master Chief and Cortana, respectively.
NickHOST
17:43
But the book came out 25 years ago with the release of the original game.
