Haleakalā

Now, this area specifically is really prone to flooding.

I'm on near the intersection of South Kihei Road and North Kihei Road, and that's because oftentimes it rains upcountry in Kula in East Maui, for example, and then all that rain comes down the mountain, down Haleakalā, through Kahului, and ends up here in South Maui.

And this area in particular, there's a bridge here that oftentimes it is the rain and the runoff can't go through the bridge.

It's not high enough for the water to flow through the bridge, underneath the bridge and into the ocean.

Now, all of South Kihei Road is prone to flooding.

We saw that back in March during the Kona lows where portions of the road was washed away and the road was just recently reopened.

We have high water vehicles already staged in East Maui.

And some wind gusts could be upwards of 70 miles an hour, especially because if it makes landfall as a Category 3, you'll get gusts way stronger than that, right? That might be a conservative estimate.

Maui also going to get a lot of rain for the east side, right? They could get upwards of, you know, 20 inches of rain on Haleakala and down towards the Hana area, and they could get wind gusts upwards of 50 miles an hour.

For Kauai and Oahu, not so much a rain event.

We will get rain, maybe some heavy rain out towards the Waihole-Waiikani area, but really rain will not be an issue.

There could be some strong winds.

They're saying maybe on Haleakala, 60-mile-per-hour winds.

Big Island Summit, 70 miles per hour.

So just be ready, be prepared.

There's just no way around it.

The road to Hana, Haleakala, most of the good beaches away from the resort strip, none of that works without your own wheels or an expensive guided tour.

What has changed is the price craziness.

Maui rental rates have been wild this year, spiking well above where they sat a year ago during shortages tied to vehicle recalls, then dropping back down during shoulder season.

So after Haines, then we have our five days at sea.

And then up first would be Maui, and we did the Haleakala crater.

And we super lucked out.
