Human populations were expanding into new territory.

Habitats were changing rapidly.

Hunting pressure may have mattered.

Climate clearly mattered.

The beginning of the Younger Dryas was not an ordinary moment.

Climate shifted rapidly.

Habitats changed.

Fire regimes changed in some places.

And it kind of opened my mind up to think that these chuckers – could be moving around a whole lot more maybe being displaced further than we think by some of these you know burn scars around especially around the bigger fire parameters you know always thought that they were probably moving in unfortunately in a suboptimal habitat but you look at those and like if they have the ecological flex or the plasticity we call it the flexibility to move

Like you really are getting paid to experience things that many people pay good money to go and do on their own or with a guide.

So even though I'm Habitat, I'm actually paid 100% on Pittman-Robertson dollars.

And that's that excise tax on firearms, ammunition, and some archery tackle.

And that's a program if you're not familiar with it, um, where the agency pays private landowners to provide access and habitat.

That's what that program is about, is either providing that access or providing habitat or a combination of both of those things.

She also oversees the WHCMP, which is the Wildlife Habitat Conservation Tax Incentive that we have in some but not all counties.

And that one that we have here, we have kind of like small to midsize properties that we enroll in this program that they get that tax incentive to basically leave their property open for wildlife benefits.

And if we're only caring about wildlife and not habitat, then we're not really caring about wildlife at all.

Well, to set this up, you know, it was a couple of years ago the legislature created, authorized the Habitat Conservation Plate Program, which I don't think anybody in our story, you know, dislikes the program.

We're

all for it, yeah.

but you know if you're like me you saw that come through the legislature amid a million other things that came through and you thought you just kind of oh okay great you know you you'll if you want this you'll pay a little extra for the plate and a part of that purchase will go to habitat great right well that's not really how it works how it really works is the way it's been set up is you you you go to your your county treasurer's office and you get your plate And they charge you $10 extra over a regular registration for that.

And that basically covers just the cost of the plate.

And then they give you a slip of paper that says, if you want to donate to Habitat, you got to go to the Game Fish and Parks website or Game Fish and Parks office.

And you got to buy a set of decals for 50 bucks for a regular vehicle or 30 bucks for a motorcycle or ATV and get those and fix those to your plates.
