The initiative was launched five years ago by pear farmers in Takasaki City and a winery in Showa Village, both in Gunma Prefecture.

They came up with the idea to make use of fruit that could not be shipped due to defects such as irregular shape or hail damage.

About one ton of substandard pears harvested this season was brought to the winery on Tuesday.
