Gulf of Venice

Venice's ongoing close relationship with the Eastern Empire and Constantinople, in particular, is going to be key to her future status as a very wealthy commercial nation.

Doge Pietro also leads a spectacularly successful expedition in the Adriatic in the year 1000, which brings the pirates of the area to heel and establishes the Republic's dominance in what gradually becomes known as the Gulf of Venice.

For a while, it looks as though the Orseolo family have found the magic formula to create a successful ruling dynasty.
