Gulf Islands

It's certainly close to her home territory, so it's logical.

And Rob Botterell was a late recruit because Adam Olson's decision to run or to not run, sorry, came late, and Rob Barrow was actually cruising in the Gulf Islands or something on his little yacht when he got the call, and he stepped in on very short notice.

He's been very capable.

They'll miss him if he does decide to step back.

I mean, we wanted to, to kind of highlight Cowichan, but we were definitely not limiting the pool to Cowichan either.

We really, the whole point of this event for us was to showcase the best of Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands, and really wanting to make sure we were highlighting ingredients that were very unique to Vancouver Island as well, and preparations that are unique to Vancouver Island.

So we were trying to make sure we pulled representation from kind of all of the regions.

And, and we have successfully done that in the cast of characters that we've, we've put together for the event.

And Salt Spring is one of them.

The largest of this archipelago, almost, of little Gulf Islands.

So at the time, I think there were about 5,000 to 6,000 people who lived there.

So a pretty small community, but kind of an interesting place to grow up as a teenager.

Now over to the Pacific Northwest, where co-founders Jazz Rivers and Anja Torres have just launched the first edition of Lyle magazine, which celebrates life on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands around it.

Monaco's Henry King spoke with Dan about issue one, the home issue.

It's funny, we've been thinking about this for, I would say, what, like two years, Jess? Yeah, probably at least, yeah, two years.

Is that kind of taking it a little slower?

I would say yes.

All the Gulf Islands have their own unique rhythm and their own very unique vibe between them all.

But generally, it's a slow pace of life.

There's room for more up there, amen? And we skipped a couple zones.

Like, we skipped 2 and 3, the Gulf Islands.

4, over on the Sunshine Coast.

We've still got Zone 6.

It says they carry the majority of the island's imported power.

It says the southern 230 kilovolt AC circuit, that's Arnaud and Delta, it says, to Gulf Islands, to the Vancouver Island Terminal in North Cowichan.

It says were installed in the late 2000s as the Vancouver Island Transmission Reinforcement Project.

It says an older 138 kilovolt AC cable on a smaller route is still present, much smaller.

They're absolutely crazy.

And yes, I always, I always, uh, carve out the Southern half of the Vancouver Island and, you know, all of the, uh, all of the Gulf Islands are nuts too.

Yeah.

Well, that, that's actually, that's, that's a good point.

And they're sane.

I don't know how they live amongst all these crazy lunatics that live there, though.

Um, but, uh, but yeah, the Gulf islands are full of like hippies and left in crazy lunatics.

So,

So I thought, what the hell are the Cowichan doing getting title and enrichment on the mainland, on the Fraser River? Turns out, at the time of colonization, the Cowichan Nation was the biggest, most populous nation and the dominant military force in the Salish Sea.

And so they had villages and communities scattered around on all the Gulf Islands and up and down Vancouver Island.

Every spring, early spring, all of them, thousands of them, and it's a pretty striking image, they would converge in their canoe.

They would canoe over together en masse, hundreds of canoes with thousands of people and decamp to the Fraser River where they would set up their village.

Gulf Islands, we're looking at you.

So there's sort of 25 different issues, actually.
