Wang and Zahl had proved the three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture.

The proof triggered a succession of prizes for Wang, who comes from Guilin, China.

She was honored with the Salem Prize, the Ostrowski Prize, and the International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians Gold Medal of Mathematics in twenty twenty-five, the Antonio Ambrosetti Medal, Sadosky Prize, Clay Research Award, and New Horizons in Mathematics Prize in the first half of twenty twenty-six, and finally, a twenty twenty-six Fields Medal, widely regarded as math's highest honor, given to exceptionally accomplished mathematicians under forty.

Wang is a professor of mathematics at New York University and the Institute for Advanced Scientific Studies in France.

Wang is reserved at first but easily loosens up.

She says her life started out a lot more carefree.

In Guilin in the nineteen-nineties, Wang would come home from school and read things like Greek myths, Harry Potter, or The Lord of the Rings, or she'd watch television or play table tennis or badminton.

Her parents were school teachers but didn't pressure her academically.

The same forces that shaped these beautiful stones have done a more remarkable job.

The landscape of Guilin is unsurpassed in all of China.

Countless artists and poets have struggled to capture the unique beauty of this place.

And then right up there as well near that top tier would be the mountain scenery near the city called Guilin.

If you've seen pictures of China at all, you've probably seen pictures of Guilin.

That's the area that has the beautiful mountains that stick up out of the ground and just go straight up into the air.

Real tall, towering, finger-like mountains there in southern China.

Guilin is extremely popular for tourists.

It's mostly for transportation of products and goods, cargoes.

But as trade develops, as economic development further taking place, you know that there'll be a more economic development and then that will have a spirit of affecting tourism industry Guangxi is actually already a very beautiful place you know I don't know if you've been there been to Guilin been to Yangshuo these are you know famous touristy places in China And tourism is a major pillar, is one of the major pillars of economic development in the province of Guangxi.

So hopefully the tourism sector can flourish as well.

Elsewhere, the Chinese are hard-pressed as the Japs surge forward in their current offensives in Hunan and Guangxi provinces.

The Japs are only 25 miles from the Allied base at Kuilin, and in battle, Paoqing, 135 miles to the north, appears doomed as the Japs move to eradicate a threat to their right flank.
