Gritstone

As crazy as it sounds, for 1986, Johnny's first ascent of this single-pitch rock climb was a sensation, earning headlines nationwide, including a two-page spread in The Guardian.

So what about the single pitch of rock climbing captured the mainstream attention? Is it simply the daring nature and scale of such a challenge that translated into so many people's imaginations? So 150 feet long, I feel like oftentimes head points, you hear about them being relatively shorter climbs, particularly like the Peak District, the Gritstone.

What does it do when you take head pointing to this scale?

Yeah.

And then like the sun came through the window and it was like this beautiful, like really crisp light.

It was basically just a crisp day of great conditions where it's just like very rare good day of cold winter's day of conditions that would have been good on Gritstone.

But me and Sam had just like not even thought to check the weather.

We've just been like, no, we're going to go try our projects on the school.
