Gregory Peck

Ladies and gentlemen,

next Sunday, two hours before my own show on the same network, the Actors' Company will present The Man Who Came to Dinner with Charles Boyer, Mel Farrar, Henry Fonda, John Garfield, Gene Kelly, Dorothy McGuire, Gregory Peck, Rosalind Russell, and yours truly, Jack Benny.

I'm sure you'll enjoy the show.

And another thing, ladies and gentlemen, the next time we meet, it will be Christmas Day.

When no one has any real... need or obligation to take care of you, you have to do that.

It kind of reminds me of Gregory Peck when we talked about him, where he specifically said, if your place in the family is not secure, it's best to express gratitude.

And James, if not specific gratitude, it was certainly, I'm going to entertain you.

I'm going to make it so you want to be around me, so you want to spend time with me, so you'll keep me around and hopefully take care of me, right? Right.

And To Kill a Mockingbird, it, it's that kind of story.

I remember two years before he died, Alice, Gregory Peck was in Atlanta, and it was a fundraiser, I wanna say, for a charity organization, some legal organization.

And it wasn't a speech.

He and his wife just sat on the stage, and as you know, mostly lawyers sitting around him.

"Oh, give a good zinger." Watch a movie.

Gregory Peck, really good.

Captain Sum Ting Wong.

Well, Sum Ting must be right.

Hold on to that title, because it comes back later in a way I actually really liked.

That book became the 1962 film with Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum, and then Martin Scorsese remade it in 1991 with Robert De Niro and Nick Nolte.

And here's the interesting wrinkle.

Scorsese is back for this one.

And like you said, there was a lot of films that were made like this, especially Westerns, like people hold up in a cabin or a frontier home or whatever, trying to fend off Indians probably.

But this movie, as you just described it, you can make the logical jump all the way to like something like Arnold Schwarzenegger and predator 50 years later and but I am, I am immediately when I was watching this and you know, the, the Western nerd that I am, uh, I immediately was like, Oh, that's like stalking moon with Gregory Peck.

Cause you never see the, the Indian in that film that's stalking them.

Um, you never see him.

Okay, so I remember people love...

To Kill a Mockingbird with Gregory Peck.

I remember having read it like in junior high school and then seeing the movie and thinking, this is such a pale imitation of a book.

I mean, it just doesn't compare.

I'll tell you what changed.

Gregory Peck replaced him.

Omen became a gigantic hit.

And Holden said yes to the sequel because really he did not want to be in a flop about the devil.
