Green Mountain National Forest

I mean, it's the Lookout podcast, right? Lookouts, right? So I've been around a lot of Lookouts over the course of my career, you know, all over the West.

But I was also, I was a forest FMO on the Green Mountain Forest for four years.

The Green Mountain Forest is in Vermont, right? Oh, so actually when my kids were about high school age, I went back and worked in Vermont for a while, which was really cool experience for them, my whole family really.

But here's where the lookout thing comes in.

So on top of Stratton Mountain, which is a ski area there, the Long Trail or the Appalachian Trail cuts over the top and it went fairly close to where we lived.

I still maintain a practice on the side I'm the clinical director for a number of programs in the state of New Hampshire and with people who are very high risk, very high need, very low responsivity, not a lot of protective factors, but I'm inspired by how much they continue to work to change.

And then it's also, I think what you might not know is in this little getaway cabin, surrounded by many thousands of acres of beautiful Green Mountain National Forest.

And so what keeps me going in all of this is the chance to get outside.

So connected to others and connected to nature, that's that's really how I'm able to do it.

I am writing this in hopes that somebody has stumbled across something similar and may have some additional information.

There's a place up in Vermont known as Green Mountain National Forest.

It takes up around 50% of Bennington County, surrounding the Glastonbury Mountains at its center, and between the years of 1943 and 1950, several mysterious disappearances took place in its deep, dark forests.

The disappearances became so prolific that the area took on a new name among frightened locals.

Yet today, merely eight residents remain within the ruins of Glastonbury's ghost town.

It enjoyed something of a boom in about 1870 when it became a logging town, and as many as 300 timber workers moved into Glastonbury to harvest the surrounding forests.

Even those familiar with the area could lose their footing in perilous situations, or suffer from serious disorientation in some cases.

Between 1945 and 1950, a remote, rugged stretch of southwestern Vermont centered around Glastonbury Mountain became the stage for five baffling disappearances.

The region stretching from downtown Bennington out into the dense wilderness of the Green Mountain National Forest was later dubbed the Bennington Triangle by local author Joseph Citro.

Long before it became a true crime phenomenon, indigenous Abenaki folklore warned that the mountain was a cursed place where malevolent spirits and a man-eating stone caused travelers to vanish from existence.

That folklore took a terrifyingly real turn on November 12, 1945, when 74-year-old Mitty Rivers, an exceptionally skilled local hunting guide, walked slightly ahead of his party in Bigford Hollow and completely vanished.

But damn if that shit wasn't genuinely creepy as hell.

It's a, and the state of Vermont is totally, you could pretty much break it up into three different sections.

You got the, You got the Southern Vermont, which we've got quite a bit of Green Mountain National Forest, which has real low deer density.

And we don't have a lot of logging, but they're just starting to log some.

But on the Massachusetts border and Connecticut River, we got a lot of oaks.

He was considered dangerous and possibly armed.

He had last been seen heading northwest into the Green Mountain National Forest, which meant he was heading directly toward the wilderness that bordered my property.

Residents were told to lock all doors and windows, report anything suspicious, and stay indoors until further notice.

I read the alert three times standing in my dim kitchen while the wood stove cracked behind me and snow piled against the windows.
