Green Bank Observatory

National Radio Quiet Zone, or NRQZ, was established more than half a century ago to shield two federally important facilities from radio frequency interference, the Green Bank Observatory in Pocahontas County and the Sugar Grove Research Station in Pendleton County.

The zone spans almost 13,000 square miles in West Virginia, Virginia, and Maryland.

Now a new federal study confirms what emergency responders like Rick Gillespie with Pendleton County Emergency Management have long known.

And that led to a formula built by a young scientist at Cornell University.

An astronomer named Frank Drake created an equation in 1961 to help organize a small science meeting that November at the Green Bank Observatory in West Virginia.

At this point, Gary's father decided to come clean about something that had been bothering him.

A few weeks prior, Gary's father and uncle Tom had taken a road trip to West Virginia to visit the Green Bank Observatory.

Both men were avid UFO enthusiasts, and Green Bank had recently installed a massive new radio telescope to replace the one that mysteriously collapsed in 1988.

During their drive, the two claimed to have witnessed an unexplained aerial sighting, a bright object in the sky that moved in a way no plane or satellite should.
