Greek underworld

All of a sudden I'm like, "Oh yeah, that's where he is right now."

Yeah, these are equally iconic to the last two, if not more so, because he visits Hades.

He v- visits the land of the dead.

He talks with a bunch of fallen Trojan War heroes.

You get all these mentions, like names dropping.

[laughs] Um, but also because, like, the Greek conception of what the afterlife is is kinda fascinating, and it ends up just, like, having a, you know, like a large influence on both Jewish and Christian, uh, notions of what the afterlife is because of the Hellenizing of Jewishness, and then works its way sort of into Christianity.

'Cause, like, there really is no fleshed out conception of an afterlife like Hades or any of the other things that came after in Judaism.

Yeah, that's right.

I don't know who in our audience has seen the movie Troy, but I remember ver- that very iconic scene with Brad Pitt as Achilles, and the little kid tells him that he's, you know, going to battle and that he's scared and that he wouldn't do that.

And Achilles says, "That's why nobody will remember your name." And here we have, of course, uh, Odysseus goes down to Hades to talk to Achilles, and it turns out that Achilles regrets that choice.

Everyone remembers his name, though.

That's right.

Only in those moments of when you, you know that people will remember you.

You don't enjoy their remembrance of you because you're gone.

You're in Hades.

You're, you're suffering.

Es un devastador círculo vicioso.
