Hello, this is Phil Tomczak, and for the next hour, I'll be reading from the September 11th issue of the Toronto Star on the Niagara Frontier Radio Reading Service.
P
0:12Phil TomczakNARRATOR
And let's start with our front page story, news from the GTA has the headline, "The Metrolinx report pulls back the curtain on what led to the GO train derailment outside of Union Station." And this is written by Andy Takagi, transportation reporter for The Star.
P

Inadequate visual inspections and track maintenance contributed to the derailment of a GO train outside of Union Station in February, a new report from Metrolinx has found, an incident that led to widespread delays across the regional network for days.
P
0:53Phil TomczakNARRATOR
A follow-up investigation by the provincial transit agency and its private maintenance contractor also found forty other track defects in the surrounding area, the report noted.
P
4:32Phil TomczakNARRATOR
"This is a truism of transit and transportation.
P
4:35Phil TomczakNARRATOR
Any of these incidents makes our safety even stronger by revealing to us where, ultimately, it could be." And let's move on to our next front page, uh, story.
P
4:49Phil TomczakNARRATOR
More news from the GTA, and it has the headline, "The Ontario Science Centre will have no science department as layoffs and restructuring are announced." And this story was updated today, and it was written by Nicholas Keung, senior immigration reporter.
P

When the beloved Ontario Science Centre opens at its new site on Toronto's waterfront, there won't be a science department.

I'm gonna actually, I, I'm gonna...

I actually looked at the data for the entire GTA-

Mm
J
10:21John PasalisHOST
... and it's actually the same.
D
10:22DavinGUEST

J
10:22John PasalisHOST
So new listings for houses and condos across the entire GTA-

Ross Clark: Stock Markets, Gold, Silver, Oil, Bitcoin. Rick Ackerman: Stock Markets, USD, AI, Oil. Hilliard MacBeth: US Canada Trade War, Canada 51st State, Real Estate, Robotaxis – Sept. 10, 2026
H
59:01Hilliard MacbethGUEST
And now there's one small hint of good news, and that is that it seems like the listings, which have been piling up and piling up lately, the listings, the new listings have sort of flattened off.
H
59:16Hilliard MacbethGUEST
So the listings in August in the greater Toronto area were about the same as the as a year ago.
H
59:27Hilliard MacbethGUEST
But the problem is sales are not great.
H
59:29Hilliard MacbethGUEST
So sales have not picked up.
H
61:41Hilliard MacbethGUEST
So those people that are in the pent-up demand category that RBC is counting on, could very well opt to say, hey, you know what, maybe I'll just rent for another year or two, wait for the market to bottom.
H
61:54Hilliard MacbethGUEST
And so that's the problem there.
H
61:57Hilliard MacbethGUEST
And then the other thing is, now, sometime in 2027, maybe 2028, the condo market in the Greater Toronto Area is going to stabilize because all of the buildings currently under construction are bringing new units to market.
H
62:16Hilliard MacbethGUEST
will have been completed and there's no new buildings under construction and there probably won't be for several years.
