Great Southern California ShakeOut

What is the purpose of the Great ShakeOut, and why did USC participate in it?

The USC has been participating in the Great ShakeOut since its inception in 2008, so this is the 19th year.

It's the largest disaster drill in history.

Uh, every year it increases in numbers, and it started in Southern California.

We know that schools and workplaces across the state, they will practice how to react and evacuate in the event of a major earthquake.

It's all part of the great, Great California ShakeOut, the country's largest earthquake preparedness drill.

You may also get a test alert if you have the MyShake Earthquake app on your phone.

We know how to prepare for an earthquake.

No scaring whatsoever.

Let's keep everything happy and safe.

[laughs] And coming up here on ABC7 Eyewitness News at 6:00, today is the Great California Shakeout.

Yeah.

That includes San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie.

He and Fire Chief Dean Crispen visited Grant Elementary School in Cole Valley for the Great California Shakeout.

At 10:15 this morning, schools and workplaces across the state practiced how to react in the event of a major earthquake.

After the drill, Mayor Lurie gave the students some homework.

Okay.

Hey, today's the Great California Shakeout at 10:15, so we just want everyone to remember to be earthquake ready.

Yeah, we're actually gonna participate in it, too.

Nice.

All right, speaking of things rolling and tearing up a floor, I didn't even know that there's something happening in California today, and you wanted to share with our listeners.

Coinciding with today's Great ShakeOut, The Tech Interactive, San Jose's science center, announced Seismic Valley: The Earthquake Experience, a new four thousand one hundred square foot permanent exhibit opening in summer twenty twenty-seven.

The Tech invites the community to help bring the experience to life with a unique opportunity for supporters to become part of the exhibit itself.

At the heart of the exhibit will be the Seismic Valley Library, an immersive earthquake simulator that resembles a familiar library setting.

The county's Office of Emergency Services will test the Sacramento alert system today, today, October 15th, to make sure that residents can receive critical information during an actual emergency.

The test coincides with the Great California Shakeout, the annual earthquake preparedness exercise held across the state.

If you're already registered for Sacramento Alert, you should receive a text notification.

County officials are encouraging residents to check their contact information and make sure everything is up to date.
