Great Performances

I know I had a blast recording it.

I will say Jimmy Webb's episode of Great Performances on PBS airs on October 30th.

And as he points out, that is not a show that usually... honors living contemporary people.

And Jimmy is very much both.

There's a magic involved.

So when you were working on this PBS special that's about to come out, did they involve you in it very much? Were you interviewed for it a lot? Was there a lot of discussion about the new record or about your career in your catalog? I know it airs at the end of October, October 30th.

Was it great performances? Great performances.

It's quite an honor, and I'm not sure that I'm worthy, but I'll take it.

Webb turned 80 years old in August, and there's a new album of his unreleased songs titled Yours for the Taking.

This weekend, Webb appears at the Grand Ole Opry, and later this month, he'll be featured in a PBS Great Performances special.

Webb has a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

He got his start in the business as a staff songwriter for Motown.

He has a new album of unreleased songs titled Yours for the Taking.

This weekend, he appears at the Grand Ole Opry.

And on October 30th, he has a PBS Great Performances special.

Here's a track from the album Glen Campbell and Jimmy Webb in session.

He turned 80 this year.

He has a new album of previously unreleased songs, and he performs on PBS's Great Performances later this month.

We'll listen back to our 2004 interview.

Join us.

I did it, after I closed in New York, I did it one more time three years later in Austin.

That's where it was filmed for Great Performances.

Mm-hmm.

On, so it's still on PBS.

I've got a PBS great performance special, which is a signal honor.

It's like, There have only been two great performances about songwriters, and the other one was about Stephen Sondheim.

I mean, come on.

Well, I don't feel that I could, you know, kiss the hem of his garment.

These are all my pals and they're still around.

God preserve them.

You being on PBS Great Performances makes complete sense to me.

Thank you.

On PBS, Washington Week at 8:00.

9:00 is Great Performances, and at 10:00 is Great Musicians.

And on Fox, at 8:00 is College Football, Washington at Purdue.

We're going to read a few local sport highlights next.

[laughs]

... through the Great Performances recording of it.

[laughs]

[laughs]

Yeah, the Evelyn Waugh adaptation made by, uh, Granada, uh, in the 1981.

But it was shown a lot on PBS in their, uh, Great Performances strand, which is still going, uh, dedicated to plays and musicals and that.

Tangled lives unravel.

Passions, obsessions, and secrets are revealed.

Oh, so amazing.

And then my mom is a big proponent of the PBS Great Performances, so whenever she's able to record those for me, um, she, we will watch them together.

Yeah.

So there's quite a few Great Performances that I also watched, you know, throughout my adolescence.
