Grammar school

As I remember correctly, and this could be wrong, but this is as I remember it, I was the last year that had to use slide rules for maths O-level.

And we did all of our O-levels at... at the Chancellor's Grammar School a year early.

So that would have been about 1970... 79, something like that.

And after that, you were allowed to take a pocket calculator in to do some stuff, so you didn't have to use log tables.

But yeah, so I would say, you know, I was brought up in the UK.

I did all my schooling in Kingston and Surrey, a school called Tiffin's Grammar School.

So I didn't go to private school.

And then I went to medical school in Nottingham.

Separate, separate conversation for a long piece of 900 and, and plus history.

But the North of Ireland, or Northern Ireland, depending on your persuasion, has got a grammar school education system which is based upon an 11-plus, which they now call a transference exam.

So some of us call it 11-plus, some of us call it a transference exam.

I sat the 11-plus at 11 years old, and I subsequently failed it, thus determining that I went to a secondary school while some of my friends who were smarter than me went to, to a grammar school.

But that was based on ability at 11 years old, much like SATs, not based upon ability to pay.

The story that we are looking at here is a story where there seems to be a Cold War or, um, an incident where parents are buying lots of practice papers, buying tutorship, and it seems that they're trying to game the system in order to get their children into the grammar schools.

Now, of course, grammar schools don't exist everywhere in, in, in the UK.

Um, in England particularly, there, there are only certain regions like Kent or Yorkshire that have grammar schools.
