Grady County

We've had some people withdraw, and it put us below what we needed to be able to do the annexation, so there will be no annexation at this time.

Officials with Grady County have explored other avenues to restrict the development.

However, unlike city and town officials, county commissioners don't have the authority to regulate industry.

The Grady County Sheriff's Office is being accused of keeping seized or stolen property.

And as Lionel Ramos reports, several of those folks have sued the sheriff hoping to get their stuff back.

The latest case filed in Grady County District Court last month alleges the Grady County Sheriff's Office claimed an ATV that had been reported stolen in Payne County six years ago after the item turned up in their jurisdiction.

And I have to tell you that I had several people send this to me, including Wesley, thank you very much, and, um, it's important to understand what they're saying, of course, and also to understand what the law is in Oklahoma, because it's a little different than it is in some other states.

But first of all, I'm gonna read to you Grady County Sheriff's Office statement posted to Facebook, and I'm guessing elsewhere, but at least Facebook, and I'm gonna read it to you verbatim in its entirety.

"I want to address the four-wheeler issue.

Stacy McCurry never legally registered the four-wheeler after he purchased it.

They entered it into NCIC, and then the next day it was removed out of NCIC by the Payne County Sheriff's Office.

With it being removed from NCIC, it would not alert law enforcement officials as stolen.

That is on Payne County Sheriff's Office, not Grady County Sheriff's Office.

When we recovered the stolen property off of the search warrant, we ran every VIN and a serial number on stolen items found.

Pretty straightforward.

The man is suing the Grady County Sheriff's Office to reclaim his stolen Yamaha four-wheeler, which the department recovered and titled in its own name.

after a judge allowed them to do that by issuing an order.

So the man said his four-wheeler was stolen in 2020 when thieves broke into his property, bypassing padlocks on shipping containers.

He did not hear again about this until earlier this year, when the vehicle was flagged in the National Crime and Information Bureau system, which tracks stolen items.

It's unclear why it would take five or six years to pop up there, but it did.

So the man contacted the Grady County Sheriff's Office, which had recovered the four-wheeler in 2021.

He said he wanted to arrange to pick it up.

We've been kind of looking and comparing around other areas.

Grady County has a phenomenal one.

Canadian County, they just built one several years back.

So kind of looking at some of those models and really trying to get what's best for Elk City.

Yep.

So there's, there's that sick crime that you guys have, but there's also other crimes that you, all crimes you have to deal with, including, I just kind of became aware of a scenario of some stolen property in Logan County that made its way to Grady County that is in limbo now.

So that's kind of interesting case as well.

Both counties are my jurisdiction.

This happened when I wasn't in the DA's office.

But what happened is this past spring, it was discovered that the stolen items, which included a really, really nice four-wheeler, was found in a drug raid down in Grady County.

I'm guessing and it's probably conjecture that, you know, it gets stolen and it's probably drug dealers.
