GPO telephones

... 10 watts was the, the, the general, the, the official limit.

And, uh, they used to come round and visit you, did the, uh, licensing authority, and they were part of the GPO Telephones company, which of which more later.

But, uh, they used to come and they used to measure how many watts you were running on your, on your transmitter by measuring the voltage and the milliamps to the PA stage.

Um, and, uh, that was, that was, w- was obvious...

What I didn't want to do was go into radio television, because I felt that was too, too limited.

So, uh, when I was looking for a job I...

it was, somebody suggested, "Why don't you go to GPO Telephones?" So I went there, and, uh, then interestingly enough we had to sit an exam to get, uh, to get a thing, and there was 120 people in this room taking this exam, and out of that they selected four of us, and I was the one in, in, in Bradford, who was where I lived at the time.

Uh, s- got, got a job with, with the GPO, and loved it.
